Having finished the restoration on my 67 BB we've moved on to my 70 Chevelle SS 396-350 HP coupe. I'm having difficulty locating an open, non cowl induction, air cleaner base. The base for the 70 Chevelle is apparantly a one year only item. I've posted on the Chevelle Forum without success. My question is might anyone have a cross reference on any other cars this base may have been used on? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I can't find the part number of the 1970 with BB air cleaner base. However, the complete air cleaner assembly was GM #6485239 and it had no other applications besides 1970 Chevelle with 396 or 454.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Open air cleaner
Joseph,
The 6485239 air cleaner assembly is listed in my 1970 Chevrolet Parts Catalogs (Jan. 1970 & Oct. 1970) and 1972 Corvette Parts Catalog (sept. 1971) for the following:
1970 Chevelle 396 (exc. SHP & exc. Spec. Duct Hood)
1970 Chevelle 454 w/H/Per. (exc. Spec. Duct Hood % exc. Monte Carlo)
1970 Nova 396 (exc. SHP)
1970 Camaro 396
1971 Corvette 454 w/SHP
The 6485239 Air Cleaner Assembly is also listed in the following:
1970 Camaro AIM, UPC L34, sheet A7
1970 Nova AIM, UPC L34, Sheet A6
1970 Chevelle AIM, UPC L34 (LS3), Sheet A7
CORRECTION:
Enclosed is a photo of what I believe is a base from a 6423272 air cleaner assembly that is very similar to the base of a 6485239 air cleaner assembly. I believe that the base of a 6485239 air cleaner assembly has a "radial" tube that extends about 1" beyond the lip. The "radial" tube on the 6423272 air cleaner assembly is much shorter.
Air cleaner bases are located in Chevrolet parts catalogs in Gr. 3.406. I do not believe that the base for the 6485239 air cleaner assembly (shown in Gr. 3.402) was ever sold over the counter. The outlet tube is in a "radial" position.
The 6485239 air cleaner assembly was discontinued sometime between Jan. 1982 and Jan. 1990.

Re: Open air cleaner
There is a photo of the bottom side of a 1970 Camaro L34 air cleaner assembly (6485239 air cleaner on left side) shown in the link below (posted on 04/07/2012 @ 1:17:58 PM).
NOTE: The "radial" tube on the base of the 6485239 air cleaner assembly extends about 1" beyond the lip.

Re: Open air cleaner
Note that I made corrections in my two previous posts. The "radial" tube on the base of the 6485239 air cleaner assembly (see my post @ 10:55 PM) extends about 1" beyond the lip. The "radial" tube on the base of the 6423272 air cleaner base (as shown in the photo on my post @ 10:15 PM) is much shorter.
Sorry about the confusion.

I think the only significant difference in most of these air cleaner bases is the configuration and angularity of the tube(s).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Open air cleaner
Thanks for all the responses. I think I found a base, but I also have to purchase the lid which I don't really need. I guess I can just sell the lid to someone that needs an original. I assume the lids were interchangeable between Chevelles, Corvettes or Camaros with open air cleaners.- Top

Yes, the 66-72 open element air cleaner lids were all, essentially, the same.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
