Re: Ignition Shielding
Good afternoon Gene, Is judging on appearance a new rule as of lately? I still see some judging with the magnets at chapter level. I realize that its a job in progress at this level but does anyone at the regional or chapter level use a magnet?? or seen it done at that level? Thanks, Ed
Judging based on appearance is NOT new. I learned to do it when I first joined in 1979.
Yes I have seen magnets used at all levels of judging. It is not common and is usually done in a not too obvious manner because at Regionals and National those doing it in moist cases know they are not supposed to do that. Most who do it at Regionals and National are smart enough not to put that down as a reason for deduction. They use it to confirm their suspicion that a part may or may not be non-ferious.Terry- Top

Re: Ignition Shielding
The stainless shields if I recall correctly are a 420 series stainless. Practice in the day was to have a bright side to the sheet of stainless while the other side was not. Typical blank and form left die marks are left on the parts as the material is worked. Typical the die marks were on the outer finish side. Bright side was outer while the inner surfaces were non bright. These should be the features judging looks for. Again it is a VISUAL observation.
The judging reference manual states on page 25 under originality scoring, "originality scoring is based on a part, component part, or area appearing to the judges to comply with our........." All the portions under CDCIF are defined in a visual determination of our judging standard. You can read the judging reference manual for ones self to become more familiar with our requirements.- Top
