Re: 1965 Corvette Coupe with 396 engine

Back in 1986 I was working at a Ford dealership in CT. when a when a trailer with cars we just purchased from down south pulled in. To my surprise there was a 1965 Corvette on it so I ran over to look at it, I wrote down all the information I could about this beautiful car. I kept this information all these years hoping to see it again, so here it is if any one knows were it is now I would like to know. The car was going to a place called Corvette City in Boston Ma. info: Vin #194675S119262, Trim tag K7, Style 65 467, Trim 430BA, Body S6266, Paint 900GG. I have some other info. that I'll pass to the owner.

Here's some basic info on a late 396 convertible I "rescued' from my next door neighbor a number of years ago (sat in his garage for 20 years or so). It had flares and a small block with dual quads on it when I purchased the car. Soft top only. No special factory options on it that I recall but I believe it did have a stock radio. Not sure where the car is now - but I bet it was restored and now has a matching numbers engine in it.....
VIN 23367, AO Smith body (I don't have the body number), L16 body date code, U-U paint (Rally Red), 443BA interior (red and white vinyl).

I'm pretty sure 1965 had the least Coupes built of all mid-years and '65 was the peak of convertible production industry wide.

Bill -- here's a quiz / eye exam. Frame sat in boneyard of Howard's Corvettes, south of Sioux Falls SD. Pic taken in Sept 1988. VIN stamping on the top of rear frame rail. The bird cage was off (but close by). I took down data from VIN & Trim tags.

Story was that this local 396 was racing another car when he left the road and rolled/flipped. Howard (Goehring) knew the parties involved.

So take a guess at the VIN. The last digit is located at the pen. I'll email you the rest of the data (or post here) if you don't already have this one.

Hint: This car was 26 units before Clem's 396.

That was too easy with the Clem hint . It is 14245 . I did have it as a Blue / Blue V in SD. Howard has had a few 396 parts for sale over the years . Was it a coupe or a conv.? Could you tell any options ?. I have seen a couple of cowls for sale but never a birdcage . I wonder if he had any paperwork or pictures ?

Bill -- VIN shows a coupe # 14245. Trim tag: I5; S2597; 414AA; 900FF. Can't find a general picture (which I thought I took) of a row of bodies and frames that he had, but my recollection is front cowl on the birdcage, probably both A and B pillars; can't remember if any rear fiberglass. Didn't take note of any indicators for options.

A gang of us from Calgary Alberta used to stop in at Howard's Corvettes in Sioux Falls SD on our way to (mostly) Bloomington, but also Knoxville and Carlisle. I've lost touch with him since he moved to AZ. I don't think he was the type to take pictures .

Bill: I have owned two 65 396's over the years and observed just the engine block from another very interesting car.

One was VIN 17261; it was a white coupe with unusual maroon interior. It was a New York car with a rusted out frame that I thought I could fix until I discovered rust in the birdcage and sold it cheap. I saw it nicely restored at Carlisle in the 90's but it was now maroon exterior also. Unfortunately the restorer had altered some of the unique 396 features so it looked fake although it was the real deal.

Another was VIN 19583. I sold it to close friend and NCRS member who still owns it. It was an AO Smith body convertible, originally red with a black interior.

I have also had some 396 Corvette blocks and recorded others. The earliest is 5113961 T0313IF with the Tonawanda stamp on the right side rather than the left and the VIN stamped over the build date. I have had:
                        T0511IF 5117811 and
T0712IF 5122723 which has been reunited with the original car, a coupe.
                        T0423IF 5115374
                        T0428IF 5117195 and
T0707IF 5122137 are other blocks I have gotten rubbings from.

Are any of these cars on your list?

                                Bill,
I see there are two '65 396's at BJ's this week both maroon a coupe and convertible. Do you have these on your list? Interestingly the coupe is only 11 cars later than the one posted above.
