I'm trying to install new (repro) center cones on my original 1965 KH knock offs. Not having much luck seating them. I've tried using a flat piece of 1 X 4 wood as a striking block and tapping with a hammer. No luck. Any bright ideas from you old timers?

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
Mike, Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I wasn't clear in stating my problem. What's happening is that I cannot get the new cones to seat down on the wheel. I am afraid that if I use too much force, I will just damage the new cones. Do you use something like an arbor press to get the cones to seat? Thanks.

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
if the cones won't seat on the wheel enough to clear the knock-off when its tightened on the adaptor, then i suspect someone previously added excessive adhesive in the past or the repo cones aren't the correct configuration. i just last month re-coned my set of 64 K/O's with repo cones i bought about 20 years ago and all i did was smear some contact cement on the backside of the cone and directly onto the existing, original adhesive. as i recall, the original adhesive was caramel in color and about 3/16 to 1/4" thick on each radius. mike- Top

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
Richard, If your repro cones don't fit correctly, Mike is correct, they are not configured correctly. Send them back to their source and make sure the seller is aware he is selling junk. Those cones should fit just fine with no force required. Back to the garage! Bill- Top

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
Bill, Thanks for this information. I purchased them from Long Island Corvette. They have been a trusted supplier based upon previous purchases. I thought these would work just fine, but it hasn't been the case.

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
Let's back up to the begining. I wish you would post a picture of your wheel with the cone on it so we could see how far down the cone sits. You should be able to set you spinner on it and it should contact with the wheel and not with the cone.- Top

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
Bill,
The cones are going to go back to Long Island Corvette. Can you recommend a supplier who has provided good repro cones to you in the past?

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
Dick, Like you, I have bought many parts from LICS. Ninety-nine percent of them have been okay but sometimes they screw up just like the rest of us. I would call them (NOT on the toll free number!) and explain the problem. Be sure to state you are using original KO wheels and describe how their cones do not fit. LICS may have cones from a different supplier by now. I have had this problem with more than one supplier so can't recommend anyone else. Good luck. Back to the garage! Bill- Top

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
Perry, Here is a photo of one of the cones sitting on one of my wheels. Hopefully you can see the gap. When I sit a spinner on top,it rest squarely on the cone, not the wheel.

Re: Knock Off Wheel Center Cone Installation
Here's 3 pics of cone fitment:
The first is a closeup of an original '66 KO, shows space between cone bottom and fins; cone never removed, AFAIK.
The 2nd is a repro (cast) [Western Wheel Corp._KH ___ 306065]; I figure early 1980's manufacture.
3rd is another pic of original '66, showing almost non existent gap at top of cone- Top
