Freshly Rebuilt M20 Pops Out of 3rd Gear on Decel

My freshly rebuilt M20 w/M22 wide ratio internals was just rebuilt by a local old school rebuilder (Dave Waugh) of good reputation and professionally installed w/good condition OEM Corvette shifter. It pops out of 3rd gear (and only 3rd gear) on deceleration, all other functions are fine. The harder the decal, the more likely to occur. A search of the NCRS archives suggests it could be (in order of difficulty): (i) repro boot made of stiffer materials than OEM and will not allow full travel of shifter to fully engage into 3rd; (ii) 3rd gear linkage not properly adjusted to permit full engagement; or (iii) something wrong internally in trans. Anyone experience this, know of other possible fixes, etc.? JCH

I had a Muncie M-22 Rockcrusher in my '57 that I rebuilt and it popped out of gear only in 4th gear. So I called 4speeds by Darryl and told him what the problem was. He told me it was the 3-4 slider sleeve. So I bought one from him and installed it and the problem was gone. Could be that your slider sleeve needs to be replaced, just a guess.

Let me start off saying to my know ledge there never produced a M-22 wide ratio tranny. Others may offer a different opinion but all M-22 tranmission and internals were close ratio oriented.

As far as your transmission do not feel your issue is #1 or #2 and most likely internal. I'm incline to agree with Pat that you have a 'slider' issue which engages the teeth of 3rd and 4th gears or your engagement teeth of third are worn....one or the other, possibly both.

There are several versions of the Muncie M-21 trans. I do believe that one has the larger counter gear main shaft but all M-22 internals are close ratio unless some company has machined up something new. What Darrel sold Patrick was probably a dove-tailed slider. They lock into worn gears and solve the problem of jumping out of gear. Sounds like you were sold a "Bill of Goods" by a shade tree mechanic. Go and make him fix the problem.

Provided the engagment teeth of third gear are good, a 'torque lock slider' is not needed. A closer look needs to be taken at the third gear.

When I had the same exact problem on a M21 I replaced the synchro/slider assembly and the problem was completely solved.

Mike, Original M22s were close ratio but gear sets are made today in M22 straight cut close, wide or custom ratios. I need the strength of the straight cut gear (and enjoy the gear whine) but prefer the wide ratio gear spacing. JCH

Joe, my trans builder is no shade tree mechanic and, as I indicated in my post to Mike, I specified the wide ratio spacing and Waugh indicated he has used these gear sets in numerous rebuilds w/o incident. That said, if the linkage is not worn or improperly adjusted, I will pull the trans and have him go through the internals.

John, this appears to be the most common internal problem associated with my symptom. I'm trying to dial out all external variables before pulling the trans. Thanks for posting. JCH

                    Jim,

My apologies to you and your transmission builder.

                    Good luck!

Joe, Sorry if I came on too strong - no offense taken. I've enjoyed your posts over the years and, as your NCRS number suggests, you've been doing this a lot longer than I. Best regards. JCH
