    1970 Corvette Flasher

While digging thru my box of vintage flashers I came across the flasher pictured below which I found in a 1970 Chevelle back in the 1980's in a salvage yard. I bagged and tagged the flasher as from a 1970 Chevelle with "YV" (Oct. 1969) glass code. Unfortunately I did not record the body build date. The light blue painted flasher has the following stamped on it:
"224 FLASHER", "2 LAMP - 12 VOLTS", PAT. NO. 688273 MADE IN CANADA", "S.A.E. J590b", the encircled "ts" logo (for Tung-Sol), and a "429" date code (42nd week of 1969) as show in the 3rd photo.

The flasher was attached to the clip (see assembly manual) as it has the scratches on it. I assume that this it was an original factory installed flasher because of the date code. The part numbers for the flasher (attached to the clip) as shown in the 1970 Chevelle AIM (UPC 12, sheet B4) are 383638 and 3909545 and are the same parts numbers as shown in the 1970 Corvette AIM (UPC 12, sheet B3) as well as the 1970 Camaro AIM, UPC 12, sheet B7.

I assume that this flasher would be correct for a 1970 Corvette but it might be a bit too early for a 1970 Camaro (production started in Dec. 1969). I would appreciate any comments.

    David,
I've seen many 1970 Corvette turn signal fashers and have never seen the blue metal version of the #224 in any of them. Always the blue plastic variety.

      Dave and Dave-----

The original flasher installed in my September, 1969-built 1969 was blue plastic, too.

I also have two used light blue plastic Tung-Sol flashers as shown in the photo.

The flasher on the left is stamped "TUNG-SOL 224", "2 LAMP 12 VOLT", "SAE J590a", "USA PAT. RE24023", and "FLASHER" on the top and
"8 0 6" in a vertical format on the side. I removed the flasher from an "early" 1967 Buick Special (VIN 435697B601695) in 1992. It is probably a replacement as the date code ("8 0 6") would be 1968, 6th week.

The flasher on the right is stamped "TUNG-SOL 224", "2 LAMP 12 VOLT", "DOT", USA PAT. 3218415", and "FLASHER" on the top and
        "2 1 6" (21st week of 1976) in a vertical format on the side.

According to research by Pete the Tung-Sol date code changed from "YWW" (1-digit year, 2-digit week of the year) to "WWY" (2-digit week, 1-digit year) sometime around 1969. I believe that the "DOT" was added about 1973.
