Took alternator and voltage regulator to a alt/gen rebuilder today...diodes cooked. I'll have it back tomorrow. He'll check the voltage regulator, as well. The gentleman that did the resto did an overall beautiful job but had a double hip replacement near the end of the resto and that's why he sold it. That may explain why he didn't replace the wiring harness (as it appears to be quite original). Long and short, I'm going to have the entire car rewired...just to have total peace of mind. I believe the original life expectancy of these harnesses was 10 years...no sense in taking any chances.Again, thanks to all for your thoughtful comments and educated suggestions...very much appreciated.

Re: STUPID mistake!!
Eureka!!! I got the alternator back from the rebuilder today (24 hour turn around) with all new diodes and he, also, checked out the voltage regulator and it was fried (replaced with the famous VR715 from Auto Zone...guy did a warranty replacement...pretty cool). Everything is working great. Voltmeter is reading correctly both at idle and at speed. Even the intermittent headlight operation issues went away. Power windows work much better. I'm still going to replace the wiring harness because as everyone has stated, it just makes sense. Also, will give me peace of mind.Once again, can't thank all of you enough for your comments, suggestions, ideas et al.Leif

Re: STUPID mistake!!
You guys are cracking me up!! Can we let this one die...it was embarrassing enough four years ago. There is currently nothing wrong with my '67 and everything right. Just got back from a nice Sunday afternoon 60 mile ride around the lake. Hope y'all took one of your cars for some exercise today, as well.Leif
