67 and C2 Rear End Housings date stamping

    Hi
I've seen C2 rear end housings with date stamps on only the left half side of the lower flange and stop at the casting parting line, and have seen many that cover the entire lower flange. Is any of these two configurations considered more typical, or is it considered that if the date stamp is anywhere on the flange, that it is considered acceptable? I know this isn't a judged feature, just trying to understand what is considered typical.

I can't say I've ever seen a C2 stamping that extended past the casting parting line, but I can see why the C3 version would grind the raised cast line off (to get a good impression in the metal), and I surmise that this is why they kept the stamping to the driver side carrier flange for the C2's. The C3's added the numeral before the ratio/posi-non posi code (shift ?), as well as the "W" for plant source (Warren), so there just wasn't enough room.

Just curious, I did not know that the date code on the diff was not judged. My 67 was built in March with an October date on the rear end housing. I am thinking it was a warranty replacement, but can not verify. All other dates aqre correct.

Looking for opinions, should I search out and re ace the housing with a date correct unit, or leave it as it is?

Henry, Generally the complete rear diff. w/case is not replaced under the warranty , most of the time its generally the internal parts, un-less the case was destroyed , but have never seen this. and if the case was replaced I doubt there would be a hand stamped date .only a casting date.

Interesting. Looks like I may try to find a correctly dated BB rear housing. Thanks for the input.
