    '62 windshield date code

After many years and some other projects, I'm starting to work on my '62 #3499 (daily driver back in the mid seventies).

I found that the windshield is a PPG replacement. Pilkington Classics is located right here in Columbus but I don't know what the exact LOF markings look like and exactly where they are located on the windshield.

Could somebody post a picture of the original markings and location.

    Thanks
    Jerry

Jerry,I can't get a photo to come out with anything worthwhile, hopefully, someone else will post a nice photo for you. In the meantime: the markings are in the lower corner on the passengers side of the car. Mine has three lines of writing. The top line says "Safety Plate", the middle line is small and unintelligible (by me at least) and the bottom line says "laminated". There is a LOF emblem in the middle of the writing. I hope this helps.

      Re: '62 windshield date code

      Thanks for the reply Terry.

Since posting, I uncovered an article in the Winter '85 issue of the Restorer on 1953 - 1962 LOF glass. It brings up an interesting point that you mention in your post, that in "late 1961, the word LAMINATED appeared directly below the L.O.F. shield and necessitated the moving of the AS1 and the two-letter date code to the sides of the L.O.F. shield".

Since my car has a Dec 1 build date, I'm in that "late 1961" window. What's your car's s/n or approx. build date? I'm thinking that if I get a September '61 dated windshield, that I could get by without the "laminated' wording.

I'm assuming at this time that the photos in that article are correct, but I'm still hoping someone might be able to post a pic of the LOF code and where it is placed on the windshield.

      Thanks again,
      Jerry

        Hey, Jerry,

Guess you will be looking to buy a replacement LOF windshield. Not familiar with Pikington Classics so don't know if they can duplicate the original glass and markings.. My 1962 also had a replacement PPG glass and many years ago I had a specialty glass business located near Bloomington, Ill. (specialized in classics and Corvettes) make mine with the date code and configuration I wanted. Not sure if still in business but if not, but there is Glassworks in Cresent, Pa.

Anyway I would think that the professionals that make replacement glass for Corvettes and other classics would know what the original LOF markings are and you can choose your own date code to match the build of your vette. Since the original windshield is gone, you will never know what the exact date code was. For example, on my '62, both door glasses are original to the car, and one is dated in late 1961 and the other mid-1962 for a car that was built in June 1962. Like with other dated parts, sometimes the parts selected on the assembly line are close to the build date and some times not.

        Larry

I confirm that the AS1 (at least I think that's what it says) and a date code JI or J1 are on either side of the LOF shield. My car is a very late build, serial 14211.

Very hard to get a good picture with my camera on my original 62 #00029 W/S glass. It is in the lower corner on the passenger side and says "SAFETY -LOF logo in a square- PLATE. Under the logo is AS1UL. No laminated wording. Hope this helps.

PS: I'm from Streator, IL. originally.

John, did you know Sam Meyers, Charlie Brown, or Rich Daniels? Steve

                  Thanks John

The pics let me know right where the markings are located. Also confirms that they read from the inside (and are backwards as viewed from outside) as I suspected. For what its worth, my replacement PPG w/s markings read correctly from the outside.

JerryI have bought windshields from Pilkington and they date code them for me and they are correct with the lettering and they do know about being NCRS correct.I go to the Columbus store and pick them up and save the $200 shopping charge. All the PPG glass now is made in Mexico and these windows have that on them but it is in an area that the weatherstrip covers. Pilkington owns the PPG replacement market and they all come thru them. These windshields are a little thinner than the old glass so it is necessary to glue the gasket to the glass when putting them together. I use a silicone adhesive and have good luck with it. The weatherstrip is another item there has been post about that have been giving members problems with wrinkles so look them up.Joe

Thanks for all the input and pics. I'm comfortable now in making sure the logo, etc. will be etched as they should be.
