The NCRS Manual states: "steering gear box was natural finish on earlier cars and semi-gloss black on later." Can anyone tell me approx date they started painting these? Thank you.

Keith, I believe that in 72 sometime they started painting the steering boxes black. (The exact date I don't think is Known) and that boxes before that where natural as Alan states.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 1970 Steering Box painted?
Here what I think I know. Over the years of judging for 1970 steering boxes have been both painted and unpainted. Have seen Jan 1970 builds with paint and without. So if you have not checked closely or no longer can check your box for possible paint. Then painted or unpainted would work but we would like to see the finish it originally had if known. An inexperienced judge may not know this so be prepared for a possible deduction. Here is an older post.

Re: 1970 Steering Box painted?
I have built boxes from 63 - 82 and most were black but I have seen bare iron through the year ranges. My original 72 was bare iron, I just did a 79 that also was bare iron. Most of the C2 boxes were black.- Top
