Thanks for the explanation. I'm still confused, where is assembly included in CDCIF? If the machined areas are supposed to be free of paint, I can understand that being a finish issue. Are you saying that since the machining was performed after the dipping that this also counts as an installation deduct, or configuration deduct? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that as paint is a finish.

    Trying to learn, thanks.
    Peter,
Think of installation or assembly as the same CDCIF instead of CDCAF. Same think, putting the thing together which includes sequence if visually detectable. In the case of the spindle the sequence is detectable to judges if the paint is applied after the machining operation. It would be advisable to the owner/restorer to run a whiz wheel to clean the machine surfaces of paint. A finish can be paint, plating, oiled, or bare as in no finish. Anything applied to the part over the substrate material. If you as a judge prefer to call it a configuration deduction that is ok. But be sure to note it as such so the owner will know what you are deducting for. Also be sure to stay within the 20% for any one section of the CDCIF. Do not double count deducts.

Just as a clarification the Configuration is the most important part. If the configuration is not even close then the _DCIF will not matter. But if originality received 10% minimum originality points then he qualifies for condition points. Less than 10% originality equals total loss of condition points.
