Does anyone know if the alternator should feel warm while charging the battery? Also how can you tell if the battery is defective without taking it to an auto garage? Thanks, Ron

Re: charging battery
It should not be warm. If it is, that is an indication that current is going through it - usually caused by bad diodes.
You aren't telling us much about what your problem is, but I take it that your batt may be going dead over time. That too can be an indication of bad diodes. If you have a disconnect switch, that will isolate the battery from the car. If you don't have a disconnect switch, you should get one. Before pulling the battery I would have the alternator checked out at an auto store. That may solve your problem without pulling the battery.

Re: charging battery
I had the same concern yesterday after a ride as my last start up to move the car back into the garage I got a cranking hesitation (during hot soak). My alternator was hot too, but then so was the entire engine and after all the alternator mounts to an exhaust manifold. So, I will wait to see how it responds to my Battery Tender first and then maybe I might stick my charger on it which will check it's voltage.

Re: charging battery
Hi Stu,
A hot alternator with a hot engine is very normal. But if you got a cranking hesitation that is sometimes an indication of a battery telling you it is on its last legs. After setting for awhile it could be weak. Put your charger on it as you say.
Glad your ticker is better and you are enjoying your ride. I am envious of you - we still cant do that. It has been a horrible winter up north.

Re: charging battery
Dan;
You were sooooo right. My charger says "bat bad". My trickle charger's green light glows so low it can only be seen in the dark. Guess I have to call my friend at Reliable Battery again. Believe this last dry battery made it about 3 years, which is good for any battery here in Florida. I just hate the changing process, but at least these dry batteries are light. Last one I pulled out was a wet one - WOW!!

Re: charging battery
Hey Stu,
Glad you found the problem. A new batt is good cheap insurance for not getting stranded.
I know those batteries are a bear to change. Can you get someone to help you? Your son or somebody? Don't overstress your 'you know what'.
Good to have you back on the forum again.
