65 AIM - 66 Emblem change showing in 65 AIM? Why?

img_29bbfc6c60234aae9458514484daff11.jpgUPC F1 of the 65 AIM shows the Corvette script emblem added to the 66 Corvette. Why is it showing as a revised date of June, 65 in the 65 AIM?

    Jim,
Would not the build for 65 model Corvette be all done by June 1965. July and August 1965 is the pilot line for 1966 model year time frame.

True, but there were 2300+ '65 cars built in July. Just seemed strange they would picture the emblem in the 65 AIM.

The 3859046 and 3872929 emblems are the same except that the 3859046 emblem has a bright red flag with "PT 3859046" cast on the back side while the 3872929 emblem has a dark red flag with "PT 3859046 65" and "3872929 66" cast on the back side. I believe that the 3859046 emblem is also a bit lighter in weight than the 3872929 emblem. The 1965 AIM revision record dated 6-3-65 is the date of the drawing. Who knows when the actual change took place on the assembly line. The existing stock on hand was usually used up and sometimes mixed in with the new stock on the assembly line. The 3872929 emblem was a "late" 1965 part but who knows if it was ever installed on the 1965 Corvette production line.

My 1966 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 1965) lists GM # 3859046 for the 1965 and GM # 3872929 for the 1966 but these are service parts sold over the counter. GM # 3859046 was replaced with GM # 3872929 in March 1966 as per Chevrolet Parts History (service parts, not assembly line parts).

When engineering updates the design and drawings it is done months ahead of time so parts can be made and ordered prior to the time needed on the assembly line. I would suggest the new emblem and design change was intended for the 66 model year and not 65. Also keep in mind the AIM is an evolving engineering final assembly document that updated and used from year to year until such time (68 model) it was almost totally redrawn to reflect the shark design.

Dave, I was referring to the addition of the Corvette script emblem (3873776) to the '66 model year hood.

            Thanks Gene.

              Jim,

              I guess there was some confusion as GM # 3873776 is a plate and GM # 3859046 & # 3873929 are emblems.

My guess is that the 3873776 plate was possibly added on the drawing on June 3, 1965, but not footnoted correctly. I would think that "late" 1965 Corvettes probably did not receive the plate because there were no plates available on the assembly line until the beginning of the 1966 production in August.

                Jim -

Simple - that sheet isn't from the 1965 Assembly Manual - it's from the 1966 Assembly Manual. Note the part number at the top of the sheet - it's 3878100, which was the part number for the 1966 manual; the 1965 manual was part number 3865300.

A quick inspection of adjacent sheets in UPC 1 of the 65 AIM reveals that there are many more having the 3878100 (i.e. 1966) part number.

Well, the binder was not mislabeled, but who ever reprinted this 65 AIM messed up. The pages for F1, F2, F5, F6 were from the 66 AIM.
Those of you with 65 reprints may want to check all your pages read 3865300

Does anyone have a 65 AIM with pages UPC 1 F1, F2, F5 and F6 numbered 3865300? If so, would it be possible to post them here? Thank you.
