    steering

I have a 1966 small block, thinking about upgrading the steering. Just looking for some suggestions as to best direction to go! Thanks Frankie O

Very simple. Install an original type power steering systems. Complete conversion kits including rebuilt original or reproduction parts are available from most of the Corvette parts vendors.

If you're talking about "upgrading" to something like rack and pinion or some aftermarket-type power steering system, forget it. I wouldn't touch that kind of conversion with a 10 foot pole.

      Re: steering

If the steering feels "sloppy" or otherwise has play, inspect the gear and all joints for play. The gear can be rebuilt and all joints in the steering linkage are replaceable.

Lack of returnability or pull to one side are usually alignment problems.

Many vintage Corvettes have never had any major work done to the steering system in 30-60 years, and even more are out of alignment.

A very simple install is the Borgeson steering system. Check it out. Just help a guy install it in a C3.

          Re: steering

As Duke notes, the steering box is often at fault for "bad" steering in these old cars. This is compounded by worn tie rod ends, loose front wheel bearings, worn pitman arms, etc. If all of these are new - or rebuilt in the case of the steering box - you'd be amazed how nice the steering can be. For example, I've replaced everything on my 1970 Cutlass and had the steering box rebuilt. It made a huge difference in what I thought was already a nice car.
