    Jeff -

They did. Headers and sidepipes nearly identical to the Hookers were designed by GM and manufactured for GM by Kustom Equipment in Flint, Michigan (who also made the OEM tubular headers for the Cosworth-Vega in 1975); they were available as an over-the-counter "Heavy-Duty" package and were good for over a 100hp increase over the stock under-car system on the L-88, but obviously weren't suitable for legal production use.

      Re: Failed design

I made the L-88 design rear cold air induction that Penske used on the 66 at Dayton for my small block road race car. FYI the small block carb center is in a different location that the big block so this was a project, but It looked great and I think made a difference. Don't use anymore since I switched back to Fuel Injection. I have photos of design.

Did that setup yield any extra hp?
I tested the system on my '73 by measuring the difference in air temps inside the air filter housing @100 mph with the flapper door 'open' and 'closed'. The decrease in temp was 1 degree F. All show, no go.

My friend had a 58 in which we put a Pontiac 389 engine (I thought his "got to have cubic inches for more muscle" idea was crazy, but who was I to protest too much since he sold me the original low mileage 290 hp fuelie engine for mere peanuts). Even using small bonnet air filters on the tri-carbs we had to create a forward facing air scope out of fiberglas just to clear the fron carb. Due to water ingestion problems we had to put a simulated screen plug in the opening anyway (this was in 1958).
