I'm trying to find a pattern with the stencil frame date to the actual build date. Example: my 68 Coupe has a 12-28-67. Frame stencil and build date was 3-21-68. Close to 3 months. Any help with those that have seen their frame date is appreciated. Thanks, Jeff.

Re: 1968 Frame Stencil Date to final build date
Hi Jeff,
Here's the stencil for my 71 built mid-January 1971.
There were no cars produced during October 1970, so that may have affected the time lapse.
Thus this span may not be typical for other periods during the 1971 model year.

Re: 1968 Frame Stencil Date to final build date
Jeff, the stencil would be on the passenger side rail under say, where the door lock is. You would need to take off your 2 piece rocker panels . On the driver side around the same spot would be the "OK " written in Green Crayon.68 L79 Convertible: Triple Black: Work In Progress, Body off. Now on!

Re: 1968 Frame Stencil Date to final build date
The TIM&JG calls the location out as upside down on the front of the front cross member. Do you or others know if this OK appears in various locations and why was the "OK" used? Was it more common to see this on a frame than not?
I'd be curious to hear what the consensus is on adding it or leaving it off as well as location.

Re: 1968 Frame Stencil Date to final build date
Patrick, the location on my 68 coupe is on the driver side side rail say under the door locks. I once took a picture but it came out lousy. I plan on taking another one with better light. The green OK in my eyes was a notification of an inspection of some sort. Frame? Possibly. I agree, if it wasn't there why add it.68 L79 Convertible: Triple Black: Work In Progress, Body off. Now on!

Re: 1968 Frame Stencil Date to final build date

I'm confused by what you are seeking to find regarding the build date of your frame. Are you:
1. asking for a 1968 frame stencil template with both date code and part number?
2. the lapsed time between the frame date code and the vehicle assembly date via the trim tag date code?
3. Frame stencil template paint color?
I suspect your seeking #1 and #3 but not sure. I'm responding because I have tracked frame date codes vs trim tag date codes among 78 models to identify the timeframe and lot number that should be on a 1978 frame stencil date code. I can't say what the format or color used in 1968.
But would add that there is unlikely constant pattern between assembly date and frame date. More likely the range was between one month and three months. Frames were stacked in advance of use to keep the assembly line moving.
Also, I think you'll find that there is a difference between the part number used for automatic tranny versus four-speed transmissions. Are you looking for frame stencil data to reproduce the stencil for a restoration?
Hope this helps!Tom Russo

Re: 1968 Frame Stencil Date to final build date
Yes Tom, it was#1 and #3. My 68 coupe has a 78 day lag between frame stenciled and build. Was asking 68 owners who new their stencil date to build date.68 L79 Convertible: Triple Black: Work In Progress, Body off. Now on!

Re: 1968 Frame Stencil Date to final build date
So you are looking for the date gap between the stamped frame stencil date code and the trim tag date code...among 68 owners?Tom Russo
