Chevrolet to Restrict Camaro Z28 Parts to owners only!

    FWIW:

GM has a vested interest in keeping a Z/28 a genuine Z/28. Its owners, we'd imagine, do, too.

Thirty-five parts on the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will be sequestered for owners only -- if you want to build your own Z/28 "tribute car" for your devious Barrett-Jackson plans, you're straight out of luck. GM Authority's sources have released a full list of restricted parts. There's important stuff in here (differentials, brake rotors, driveshafts and seats), but the list largely comprises bodywork: plates, covers, spoilers, shields, fascias and that trick carbon-fiber hood with its slick aero tricks

Wish they had done this for the ZR1.

Don't VIN number codes define/identify these high dollar cars?

Interesting topic, and I'm generally all for it, but just seems like there's a better way if they want to get rid of the fakes/fraud. I don't have a problem with "tributes" as much so long as they cannot be passed off as real, hence the VIN question.

For the new gen ZR1s, yes VINs are distinctive, but I also assumed the Z/28 would be too, as well as the new Z06. However, I have seen some faked ZR1s out there. It doesn't take many parts, and many people, even some ZR1 owners I know, don't know about the VIN being unique.

The VIN's would be "distinctive" from the engine option alone, which is always coded into the VIN. Although there may be other "distinctiveness", it's not really necessary.

The ZR1s also have sequential VINs as they are built. Yes, the engine option is in there too, but the distinctive, easy to see thing is all those zeros in front of the last 1,2,or 3 digits.
