    1973 Won't Run

My 73 has not been fired up in 7 - 8 months, installed a new battery, turns over fine. Checked the spark from coil wire to ground, spark is orange, checked voltage the on positive side of coil with the key on pos., only getting around 7 1/2 volts. Any ideas?? Glenn

That sort of voltage is plausible and probably not the source of the problem. Assuming there's fresh gas, the choke is set, it's not flooded, the accelerator pump works, I'd look at the points to see if there's a reasonable gap and the metal surfaces are clean.

Thanks Michael, I have always used aviation fuel, its most likely a year old, still smells good. It seems to be getting fuel, I did put a new set of points & condenser in Saturday, but will recheck the gap this afternoon. I treated it as if was flooded the accelerator on the floor, it sounded as if wanted to crank.

You need to be sure one way or the other. Does the accelerator pump squirt fuel?

If your fuel pump filled the carb the accelerator should squirt fuel every time until the fuel is expelled and the carb needs a refill. I know airplanes sit sometimes for long periods of time and fly from the airport with fuel in the tanks that have been there for some time.

You checked for spark from the coil wire; do you have spark if you move downstream and check from a plug wire?

Also, did you remove and reinstall the distributor since it last ran? Maybe timing is off?

Its running, looks like we have a bad accelerator pump, it would not squirt so gave it splash and it fired up. Thanks Michael, Jim and Larry.Glenn
