    Several Engines/Transmissions with same VIN?

    FWIW:

I took this from one of my Camaro Discussions boards. One of our more knowledgeable members at a recent "Norwood Gathering" reported the following:

I spoke to the guy who had the job of stamping the VIN on the engines and transmissions. I asked if they were stamped at the same time, by the same person, with the same gang stamp. He said "YES", I said "OK, THANKS", He said but wait, there's more...If he got behind for what ever reason, he stamped 7 or 8 powertrains with the same VIN, till he got caught up. He said he did not want to get into trouble, and no one checked it anyway. Grinning ear to ear, he said What do you think of that? So guess what...you could have a born with drivetrain with the wrong VIN.

Comments/Did it happen with Corvettes also?? Larry

I would not think so, given the much slower speed of the assembly line.
The light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.

I wonder if anybody actually double checked the stamp before it went out the door? Maybe John Hinckley could comment on this. Larry

My gut says yes it was checked and this guy was pulling your chain.

That would explain why there are so many 327/300 blocks sitting idle while the same VIN is stamped on a 427/435 engines in the cars.

          Sorry, couldn't resist.

            Makes very good sense!

Roy, I agree - the Buyoff Inspector on the Engine Dress Line checked that VIN derivative stamping against the Chassis Broadcast Copy and either OK'd it or wrote it up for repair. No way in hell he'd miss more than one in a row with the same VIN. There are lots of "tales from the assembly line", and most of them are bogus, especially at occasions like the "Norwood Gathering".
