    Correct fan finish?

Should the cooling fan for a '66 A/C car be semigloss or gloss black finish? The judging guide does not mention the finish, and I've seen a few that appeared to be a high gloss. I would have thought that semigloss would be correct.

    Thanks,

    Bob,

My understanding is the cooling fan should have a gloss sheen, but on any car that is driven that level of sheen for standard paints doesn't last long, especially on the fan. On driven cars the sheen on the fan quickly becomes semi-gloss, then flat, then bare with time. Maybe powder coat would hold up longer, but if the powder coat is obvious, you'll lose out on condition for that reason.

Since I am preparing the car for flight judging, it seems the obvious choice here would be to use a high gloss black high temperature paint. (the fan has to be repainted anyway) Would that be typical of production for a '66?

There are an infinite number of degrees of gloss level for black. I would not call the degree of gloss on an original, as-new Corvette fan to be "high gloss black". I would call it "gloss black".

          Bob,

I agree with Joe. I've seen some mid-year A-arms that are also supposed to be gloss black where the painter went overboard and made them super high gloss, which was just too shiny.
