    66 engine code help

I have a 66 coupe with a 427 in it and am trying to find out if the numbers all match. The engine code is T0406ID, I have only been able to locate one source that has the "ID" as the suffix. This is what it said ..
    1966 ID Chevrolet 427 425 Mt SHP
It says that SHP stands for special high performance. All the dates and other parts match. Can anyone verify that this is truly a corvette 427 425hp engine?

    Re: 66 engine code help

ID suffix is a 1966 425 HP 427 originally installed in a full size Chevrolet passenger car.

When inquireing about engines all numbers like casting date, block cating number and all the numbers stamped on the pad are helpful in sorting things out.

      Re: 66 engine code help

Unfortunately, the ID code is for a '66-68 427/425 hp engine in a full size passenger car, not a Corvette. Different Carburetor and exhaust manifolds are used, Although the remainder of the engine if truly a '66 casting is the same as Corvette (with the exception of the Pad Stamp) What is the casting date and casting number on the engine? If all you need is an answer to was the car born with this engine, the answer is likely not.

Matt - It looks like you're kinda new to the NCRS, welcome. I see your 66 is Mosport Green. Real nice color, of course I'm biased, I've got an L79 66 Coupe in Mosport Green. Got any other pics to share?

The photos you have added to your original post are a good step in the right direction but..... your vin is needed and the stamp pad needs the paint removed although the ID suffix is qiute legible.

Caution, do not use anything abrasive to remove the paint and scratch the suface in anyway. Solvents like laquer thinner or paint remover will not affect the surface but will remove the apint.

But as Bill says the ID suffix was used for 425 HP 427s originally installed in full size passenger cars.

Matthew, I have a '66 425hp convertible, it appears to be a very original car, never restored, my engine suffix is 'IP' which I believe is the correct code for a 425hp Corvette.

Thank you everyone for your responses, that is pretty much what i figured. Guess I was just wishing that sense the date code on the block was so close to the body build date that i might have gotten lucky.

In a way you have. So long as the cylinder case casting number is correct, and the date code of the case is within six months of the body build date you will lose only 175 points in NCRS judging. Check out those details. You may not be in too bad a shape if judging is your goal.

Matthew: Here is what your engine looked like when new. Picture taken at the AACA Grand National in Moline IL. Larry

P.S. Should not say this to loud here but I like that engine better in a Biscayne. (Even though I own a L72 Corvette)

Would the deduct not actually be 25+25 for the pad info?

Right you are Mike. The 175 I mentioned is if the date is out of bounds.

25 + 25 = 50 for the incorrect VIN and Machine assembly stamp.

There is another 38 to the pad machined surface, but that may be OK. We would need to see more and a better view of it to be sure.
