    3782608 Water Pump w/AC

    The 5thAir-conditioning

In reference to hardware, are the bolts holding the accessories (a/c and alternator brackets) not painted since they were removed when the parts were assembled at St. Louis?

    Thanks!

The 5th edition TM/JG page 143 under fittings: “Air-conditioning equipped engines use a short water pump nipple approximately 1” in length with a narrow hex section. Both nipples are cadmium or zinc plated”. The picture shows what looks like the longer style and is painted.
The AIM on UPC C60 D3 sheet, calls out this fitting as “3849848 nipple – w/pump”

Shouldn’t this fitting be about 2-7/8” long?

Since it’s called out on the AIM, should it be unpainted?

I’ve got the opportunity to make this right and just want to be sure what is correct.
    Thanks!

The waterpump nipple pictured is a GM #3849848 and is the correct nipple for a 1967 small block with C-60. This nipple is about 2-7/8" total length.

Most small blocks without C-60 used a similar nipple of GM #3736495. This nipple was about the same length as the above. However, it has a much wider hex section. Actually, I believe the factory may have pretty much used the 3849848 and 3736495 interchangeably. As a matter of fact, the 3849848 replaced the 3736495 for SERVICE in October, 1986 but I think St. Louis figured out they interchangeable WAY before that.

The short waterpump nipple, GM #3739798, was used for big blocks with C-60.

      Don -

That heater hose fitting should NOT be painted - it was installed at St. Louis, and was zinc-plated.

As you review each bolt involved in attachment of accessory drive parts, any bolt that shows a part number callout in the A.I.M. should NOT be painted, as it was installed at St. Louis. Some engine plant-installed bolts were removed and re-installed (no part number callout in the A.I.M.), and those will be painted.

The AC nipple is 2 3/4" long w/a 7/8" X 1/4" hex on a cylinderical fitting zinc plated. As pictured on pg.143.
