    Rebuilding Carburetors

Has anyone had work done by All American Carburetors good or bad? Out of Orange Park, Florida

    Re: Rebuilding Carburetors

I have had some AFB sections refurbished by them and they came out excellent. They use a different media for cleaning than do many of the others. For aluminum, anyway, it looks more natural (original), nice and smooth instead of pebble finish that is obviously media blasted. I have another section to send to them soon, that being a lower AFB body on which I want them to re bush the primary shaft. They tried to talk me out of it, but will do it if I want. They are very honest and straight forward as well as knowledgable.

It's a small family operation, but they know what they are doing and are well equipped to handle our NCRS member's needs.

Keep this very important fact in mind, and read the other thread on carburetor rebuilders as well:

if the core carburetor has internal issues, such as hidden modifications, or modifications that are not easily seen, then any rebuilder/restorer will probably not find it, and send you back a very nice looking carburetor with all the same issues that it had before you paid big $$$$$$$$$$$ to have it restored

I have had this happen to me, and it was up to ME to find the defects/modifications...........sometimes after much time and effort...........after installing the nice, pretty museum piece on engines.

Don't be fooled when the experts tell you that they run them on a drone engine before shipping back to you, because most issues do not show up unless the carb is installed on an engine and run UNDER A LOAD. This cannot be duplicated in a restoration shop unless the shop has a dynamometer.

        Re: Rebuilding Carburetors

I think I may have one of those carbs of which you speak, and that is why I only use their service to do refurbishing on just parts and not the entire carburetor. On that I'll trust myself.

Absolutely correct! I've been telling folks exactly this for YEARS. It's also one of the reasons that I do not recommend that folks purchase rebuilt carburetors unless there is absolutely no other alternative. I have found that MANY of the cores from which rebuilt carburetors are built were abused, damaged, or deteriorated in some way that cannot be repaired. Such carburetors will NEVER support a well-running engine. NEVER! They can be made to APPEAR just like a brand new original carburetor and they can have "numbers" just like an original carburetor, but they absolutely won't run just like a brand new original carburetor.
