    Windshield washer jar 3990892?

Was the windshield washer jar #3990892 ever used in Corvette production? I've googled it, but find numerous conflicting information.

    TIA,
    Mike

Well, that's because this is a very "conflicting situation". According to GM, the GM #3990892 was not originally scheduled to be used for any Corvette. According to GM, GM #3961557 was used in PRODUCTION for 1970-73 Corvettes However, I believe the GM #3990892 was used for 1972-74.

The GM #3961557 was discontinued from SERVICE in June, 1971 and replaced by the GM #3990892. My guess is that's about the time the 3961557 was also discontinued from PRODUCTION and replaced by the 3990892.

The two containers have different configurations and also both have the part number embossed on them. So, observations and reports for 1970-74 Corvettes would be interesting.

By the way, the GM #3990892 remains available from GM in SERVICE.

It appears that there were possibly 3 different venders that supplied the various 1970 Chevrolet models and 1971 Corvettes with the 3961557 windshield washer Jar.
Over the years I have collected the first 2 versions listed below.

      1. Embossed "1" (or "2"), "BP", and 3961557" about 2 3/4" to 4 1/8" up from bottom.
      2. Embossed "3961557" about 1 5/8" up from bottom.
      3. Embossed "3961557 MADE IN CANADA DONLEE"

I believe that the Canadian jar was issued to 1970 Chev. models that were made in Canada at the Oshawa plant like the 1970 Chevelle.

        Hi,
I believe I have bottles that are the same configuration but with 3 different embossed info….. well, 1 with none, and 2 with differing embossing.
        1. My original 71 #6589 mid-January bottle is plain. No embossing.
        2. I found and bought another plain bottle over the years. No embossing.
        3. I found and bought 2 bottles with the info described by David in his #1. (With BP.)
        4. I found and bought a bottle with the info described by David in his #3. ( Canada / DonLee)
2 have been sold to members, 2 are in the basement, 1 is on the car.
        Regards,
        Alan

          Re: Windshield washer jar 3990892?

This all started while at a Chapter judging meet. One of the judges mentioned my 70 washer jar looked too white and should be more of a cream color. I checked the part # in the AIM which showed 3961557. My car has a 3920892 installed. I have no idea if the 3920892 installed is original to the car. From Joe's response it seems unlikely.

One more bit of information I have observed, both washer bottles have the letters BP above the part numbers, however washer bottle 3961557 has the letters BP staggered, while washer bottle 3990892 has the letters BP side by side.

                    Mike------

These washer fluid containers were used on many GM vehicles of the period. I'll bet they were being produced by the millions. I fully expect that B-------Plastics had way more than 1 mold and there were likely slight differences among molds, especially for minor features like this.

With respect to the examples of these found without any part number, those may have come from a mold or molds which intentionally deleted the part number because those were destined for the aftermarket. Of course, some of those destined for the aftermarket could easily have found their way to GM.

I went to take another hard look at washer bottle 3990892, it looks like I was incorrect earlier, the letters BP appear staggered.

I think the "B P" was for Blue Water Plastics in Algonac and Port Huron, Michigan - they made LOTS of molded and blow-molded plastic parts for GM.
