Alternator Belt Cross Reference

I need an alt belt for a 1965 327/365 without air conditioning.

Looking for a cut style, not wrapped. If someone could give me a Gates, Dayco, or NAPA number I'd appreciate it.

I have a NAPA 7550 (13/32 x 55 5/8) installed and it's functional but not sitting low enough in the pulleys. I threw one last week and need one that sits deeper in the pulleys like original.

That is the current replacement Joe. See if you can find a 3/8's belt about 1/2" shorter

As Dick mentions, the only way you're going to get a belt to ride lower in the grooves is to use a 3/8" wide belt. Can you still get them? Yes, you can but the only ones I know of are the real "el cheapo" type, intended for folks on a REAL low budget. The major manufacturers are pretty much going with 13/32" and 7/16" wide belts

Gates #7375 is a high capacity V-belt with the cut outs. The top width is .41 inch (10 mm) or 13/32"...about 1/32" wider than 3/8"...should work just fine.

I just ordered 2 (two) Gates 6755 which is NAPA 3L550W from Rock Auto. 3/8 x 55. The idler belt has been on this engine for years, and is a wrapped belt from Quanta, which sits very noticeably lower in the pulleys. It saved my engine from boil over more than once!

The situation is that I race this car occasionally, and WHENEVER I RACE AT NIGHT WITH THE HEADLIGHTS ON AS REQUIRED, THE LOADED ALTERNATOR THROWS THE BELT. I shift at 7500 so belt location depth in the sheaves becomes more important. When I race during the day, the unloaded alternator has no effect on the belt.

Yes, I was aware that the Quanta belts were available in 3/8" width but somehow I got the idea you didn't want to go with a reproduction belt.

I did not realize that Gates currently offered a 3/8" wide belt but, apparently, they do. That's good.

That is a fractional horsepower belt according to the literature. The 3L prefix at NAPA was the clue that caused me to look it up. I would not expect it to be a long life belt in an automotive application.

Yes, the tech rep at Gates called it an "industrial" belt. They are sold by Rock Auto and other places for automotive applications. I'll examine them carefully as to construction, but I suspect that industry standards have changed over the years. The fact that they are referred to as industrial belts and not automotive belts could mean that 3/8 top width belts (as original) are no longer considered as "automotive" standard belts.

I have been using a NAPA 7550 (13/32 x 55 5/8) for the last 5-6 years ever since the wrapped Quanta alternator belt......that I used when I restored the car.............broke. The 13/32 top width belts just won't stay in the pulleys at high RPM when the alternator is generating anything more than minimal current.

We'll see how this belt performs, but somehow I trust a Gates more than a reproduction "wrapped" belt.
