Need some lacquer advice - anyone use lacquer retarder? Pics inside.

I'm shooting my first ever lacquer job on my 63 and all thats left is to wet sand and shoot one last wet coat. Temps are rising and I need something to help keep this stuff wet until i get around the car. Already using the slowest thinner (1:1) I can get from Dupont but it is starting to kick before I get to the next panel. I'm getting a little overspray at my cut in points. I've read about adding lacquer retarder but I need to know from somebody who has used it. Dupont's product 3979S is no longer availible. What else will work and how much do I need to use for a quart of Dupont 99S acrylic lacquer?

Tracy . I would not use any retarder. It was made to use when painting in very humid weather to keep the paint from blushing and trapping moisture under the top coats . It can cause lots of problems , It can soak down and bring up repairs and sand scratches .
As far as drying to fast thats not a big problem on lacquer a panel should be tack free by the time you paint the next panel . I use 3661 a medium dry thinner unless it 90 degrees or warmer . As far a 1.1 thats to thick for black I would try 1.5 to 1. . I always put at least 3 coats at a time for the last paint . one coat could cause a problem when buffing . 3602 is duponts best and slowest thinner . What kind of gun are you using I would not use a HVLP . I use a Devilbiss siphon gun on black lacquer with low pressure & 1.5 to 1 . you wont get the overspray and dryness you are now getting . You could go up to 2.1 if needed .

Thanks Bill. Using a hvlp because I didn't get good results with my Sharp model 450 siphon gun. I will add more thinner and try again with it.

Tracy, I agree, thin it to 150% and quit drinking beer admiring your work between spraying panels.

            Tracy,
Bill may have a good point but I use it in all paints from laquer to poly. Originally I used it for the humid blush factor that Bill described but found it necessary to keep the last coat wet especially when you have to paint at the top of the temp limits. Originally it was used to slow drying time down and let the moisture get out of the top coat that caused blushing.
Your job looks great especially foy laquer.
