    Possible Search Anomaly

    Copied from TDB thread Here....
    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...-for-GM-181365

Bringing it all here to diagnose separately away from the TDB so it doesn't cloud the posts up.

Gary B was having search problems not getting expected results. See post # 3 below for the answer.

i don’t know why, but when I search for 181365 I don’t find any other posting except my latest one. I tried searching for 181365 and #181365. Neither one brings up Joe’s old posting. What did you do differently from me to find Joe’s posting?

    Rich,

I figured out the problem. In the attached photo, there are two ways one can perform a search. There is a white box under the word SOCIETY, which I typically don’t use, and there is a “Search Forum” link about half way down the image at the right. I’ve always used the Search Forum link. But using that one does not find me the 181365 posts in the archives. Whereas if I use the upper white search box, I do find the post in the archives. So, I now know to enter my search terms in the upper white box.

    Thanks,

    Gary

I know what the problem is, but don’t know how to fix it. When I do a basic search, it searches thru the regular forum and the child’s forum. But the old 181365 thread with Joe’s postings is in the archives forum. I can add the archives to the places to search when I’m in the advanced search window, but the addition of the archives doesn’t stick when I return to do a basic search. Even though I clicks on save search settings in the basic window. I just can’t figure out how to force it to keep the archives setting when I’m not in the advanced search window.

    Rich,

When I used Advanced Search and use the Rich M. search techniques such as () around the bolt part number, I get 3 hits.

Nothing has changed on the TDB in almost a year since the upgrade.

Ok I think I figured it out....

The "Search Forum" button is searching ONLY the Technical Discussion "Forum", not Archives or any Child Forums.

Use Advanced Search or the White shaded Search button at top of page.

        Rich,

Each forum can be searched separately by using the "Search Forum" button as you noted. While Advance Search can search "All Forums".

You know, I never used that "Search Forum" button as I always use Advanced. Mostly looking for my old threads which are typically in the Archived section to link in a post.... cuz I've been on here for so long and am getting old and feeling Archived myself. lol
