Joe,

You have to go back to the thread you lost your posting on and click on Reply to Thread. The window that opens will look like this if you have lost what you had started. I assume that if you were starting a new thread it would work the same when you clicked on New Thread it would give you option to Restore.

John,

I think Joe was creating a new post when it happened, so he cannot go back to reply-to-thread. I suspect after he lost his window with the original post, he then created this "TDB Problems" post. He likely did not notice the "Restore Auto-save Contents" button at the bottom of the edit window. Too bad that button isn't at the TOP of the page. It'd be more noticeable.

I was starting a new thread. However, when I go back now to the "Post New Thread" screen I do not get the "auto-restore" as you have described above. Unless I'm missing something, I guess that whatever I composed has now "expired".

Ok I just did another experiment. Once auto-saved, you have ONE CHANCE to recover it.

I exited a autosaved post. I went back and and DID NOT Restore it, but created a new post. I submitted it. I then went back to creat a new post, to recover the previous autosaved one. The Restore button was not there.

I'm afraid Joe's original post is not retrievable. If he noticed the button at the bottom I'm sure it would have worked.

Good catch on the Restore Function. Had noticed the Auto Save feature, but never really tested it.

John's updated the FAQ with additional info on Auto Save & Restore functions.

Basically, when a "Reply to Post" or "Start New Thread" is abandoned for whatever reason - the Restore text and title are available when you select the same post to reply to or click on Start New Thread.

Restore of the abandoned text is available until another "Reply to Post" or Start New Thread" is made. (information vBulletin website)

Manage Photos --- Can I download to my computer the 71 pages (1400+ pics, in my case) that I have posted over the years. I takes me about 1 hour to go through the list at 20 frames per page, and if I know that the pic location relative to the discussion at hand is in the 30-something page zone, it's very frustrating and time consumming to find it. I could search much faster if on my own machine. [or have a little window, like eBay, that you enter a page number to jump to].

On the other hand, it's nice to be able to recover a pic posted to a previous thread, and re-use for a new thread -- the subject at hand may be totally different, although the pic may well serve the current discussion.

Getting the hang of the new process, but a step-by-step on the new photo posting requirements would certainly help all of us.

After the new VBulletin is running smoothly, will we be able to eliminate the 30-second wait time between searches?

It may be one small step for the makers of VBulletin, but it was one giant leap backward for archive searches

Rob and John are working hard to resolve this Issue. vBulletin changed / improved the search function and locks an entire table rather than just the row the post is in. Result is it's causes the server to slow to a crawl.

I did some research on this issue and found no solution that would be of any help to you. The photos here are stored in the database so it would be easy to run a search in the db of all attachments you have posted. The problem is they are just a string of characters in the database and I have no idea how you could ever retrieve them out of the database back into a photo format.

Unless you have access to a server that is running a MYSql 5 database. Then I could send you an exported table of your photos and you could quickly write a script that would output one record after the next as view-able photos.

Thanks, John -- I'm getting the hang of handling existing (data base) and new pics I add to this NCRS base. Probably my own fault that I post so many pics .

Noticed something interesting, though. Of the 1400+ of my pics on the NCRS site, about 450 of them originated in my Photobucket account, and they are around 2.2 or more megabytes each. I notice that these also show in the data base, along with my other posted jpgs that respect the 293 kb limit.

When I post a Photobucket pic, I just type the link to that site, so they appear in the TDB post full screen (or even larger, requiring a horizontal scroll [although that's not my intent ]). But I see these also show up in the NCRS photo data base, downsized to the posting limits. So this action must be done in the background, without action on my part.

Seems that even pics posted respecting the kb limit now appear larger on screen when the thumbnail loads. Good stuff.

Some time back Rob wrote a script that pulled all of the photobucket and other linked photos into our database so they would not be lost. That is why we call him Boy Wonder!

The forum software will resize photos but it chokes if they are too large. Many of the 10 meg px cameras shoot pictures with a huge file size. Good for high resolution but not so good for web display. I am not sure any more but browsers used to only show 72 dpi and no more the 213 colors. That is a far cry from what a decent camera will do but it is good enough for web display without taking forever to download and open a page full of pictures.
