    Distributor i.d. help needed

I have a tach drive TI distributor with an i.d. tag stamped 1111465 6 D 1. This distributor has a GM vacuum advance canister on it, but the canister has no provision to attach a vacuum hose (not even a hole). Can anyone help me identify the original application for this distributor? It was formerly used in a sprint car. Thanks.

    [paste] I have a tach drive TI distributor with an i.d. tag stamped 1111465 6 D 1.

    Hi Jerry -

According to Hollander Interchange Manual it was used in a l970 Corvette 454, 460HP (???). Does it have the hole at the end of the tach drive cross shaft that was used in later years?

        Jerry and Bob------

Yes, I come up with the same application from a 1971 edition of the Corvette Parts and Accessories Manual. It shows "70 Corvette w/H.D.(454)...1111465". The problem is, of course, Chevrolet never actually released the HD 454 option(LS-7) for 1970. However, since it is referenced in the 71 edition parts manual, this distributor was available in service at least for a year or two. It was discontinued in 1972.

This distributor may be a rare ball bearing type unit. Check the area of the casting where the upper portion "necks down" to the shaft area. If there is a noticeable "bulge", then this is a ball bearing unit. If you're not sure what I'm describing, compare the distributor housing to another tach drive housing. The difference or lack thereof will be obvious in a side-by-side comparison. Let me know what you find out.

Hi Joe - Interesting.....I have the same manual dated Feb 1974 and the number was still being used. So perhaps they were still available after 1972. I also have an Apr 70 Corvette Parts Catalog and its there too under Gr 2.361. It would be interesting to see if it has the relief hole at the end of the cross shaft... Also, I think the L88 distributors used the roller bearing configuration that you are referring to.

                You guys are good.

Yes, there is a 1/8" diameter hole in the center at the end of the cross-shaft housing.

This distributor's outer shape looks identical to my other distributors, so I assume that this one has standard bushings inside rather than bearings.

Incidentally, the vacuum advance canister is stamped MS 373 12.

I guess this is just an over-the-counter part bought for racing since it is dated April 1, 1976(?). We know it wasn't made in '66, and I doubt it was made in '86 or '96.

                    Bob----

I'll have to recheck my references. What I did was I first looked it up in a '76 edition parts manual. Not finding it there, I went to a 71 manual and found it. Then I checked the 72 manual and did not see it listed, so I assumed that it had dropped out of the system. This seemed reasonable since GM would not be generally inclined to stock service parts for an application that was cancelled before it went into production. Anyway, I never checked my 73, 74, or 75 manuals. I'll do that this evening.

Incidentally, another non-GM reference that I have shows a '70 454 with HD to have a 1112026 distributor.

                        Re: Distrib.1111465 avail.

                        Joe, my GM Canada Master Price List of May 26 1980 shows this part # at $ 317.25 (CDN) list price, so there's a good chance it was still available at that time. As a comparison, the ball-bearing # 1111263 listed at $ 756.15, so I doubt 1111465 was of this design. The non-T.I. '69 # 1111926 (390 & 400 hp) was $ 279.50 and the '69 435 hp # 1111928 was $ 334.20.

                            Jerry----

The "373" part of the inscription refers to the last three digits of the vacuum control GM part number---in this case 1115373. The "12" indicates the maximum total advance that the particular vacuum control could produce. The thing I could never understand, though, in the case of these controls without a vacuum fitting, is how they could produce any vacuum advance at all?
