remember that the 10 degree figure is at slow idle with the vacuum advance disconnected

Also remember, timing ASSUMES the distributor is installed correctly and is not a tooth or two off on insertion....

Would being a tooth or two off matter?

Aren't you still setting the timing off of number 1 cylinder?

                    Re: Problems with Timing

Yep, but when you're off a tooth or two how do/did you move the absolute timing reference marks sitting next to the balancer to compensate for the RELATIVE change made at the distributor?

Very common problem. Distributor gets pulled and replaced but stuck in incorrectly. Now car can be timed, BUT will not agree with fixed timing reference mark/scale. Like Farenheit and Centigrade, each scale has a zero degree point but the absolute temperature isn't the same. Where water turns to ice is an absolute regardless of F/C....

                        Re: Problems with Timing

Hello Jack; I'm confused. I've pulled a number of distributors. Regardless of the orientation of the distributor body, the rotor will spin and pick up #1 cylinder, and the rest of the firing order (8,4,3,6,5,7,2). The "juice" for the timing light comes off of #1 cylinder. The mark on the balancer is for TDC for #1 cylinder. It shouldn't matter if the distributor is installed in any orientation, or, for that matter, if the plug wires are in the "correct" holes in the distributor cap (as long as they are in the correct firing order). I've always thought that the distributor could be advanced and retarded with the distributor body in any orientation. Chuck

                            Check/Installation of Distributor?

Would someone propose a way/method/reference we can all use to check/properly install our distributors so we can all talk about timing in the same light regardless of who's right on the effect of being off by a tooth or two? While that relative offset and its implications are interesting and appropriate for this DB, I am interested also in "how to check proper alignment/installation of my distributor". Thanks.
