    Young Puppies

Wow! There are a bunch of young puppies on this board. I am not sure if they were even making Chevrolet cars on my birthday. Oct. 22, 1943 ! maybe I should look for a Sherman Tank or a Jeep !

              Re: my first car was

Shades of the Godfather. Visions of running boards, tommy guns, and G-men.

My first car was a 41 Ford "opera" coupe (only had "token" running boards). At highway speeds, the range of that car was dependent, not in gallons of gasoline, but on gallons of radiator water. If your destination was more than ten miles down the highway, you had to carry enough water to refill the radiator for another ten miles. Forget anti-freeze...it wasn't going to be in there long enough to prevent freezing. Only the young would consider filling the radiator before driving to school early on a freezing winter's morn.

If that wasn't enough to sour me on Ford products, it was replaced by a 52 Ford coupe. That one WAS the end of Ford for me.

                Re: Considering the alternative,

Mark, at our age it's not that you want to stop having them.

It's just that a single year passes so fast now that it's a dang annoying denomination. At our age, inflation has caused us to want to wait for something that's really worthwhile to celebrate...like a decade. You know like, "Yipppeee...I have made another one", kind of thing.

                  Re: my first car was

Clem: if you're ever in the western Maryland area, stop by and you can use my 32 Dodge 4 dr sedan, a DK model with the rare 8 cyl flathead.Doubt you'll ever get another "first" but you're sure welcome to use it in an attempt.By the way, i still have my first, a 49 chevy coupe that has seen chevys, caddys, buicks and Olds 394 in its engine bay. now has a 454 that a daughter and i installed in the early 80's when we drug it back out of the barn after a near 20 year rest period.. it was her first car also. she now has a 6 year old son and i think i'll put something a little more docile in it when he comes of age.
Definitly won't see one of Ole Henry's powerplants though. regards from he who appears to be one of the younger "ol farts" mike

One of the younger "ol farts", indeed. Mike, you're not fooling us...you're either like us, older than dirt, or you were twelve when you joined the NCRS.

Jack - well, in my case, my birthday meant "the day of the year not the year". My acutal year was 1954, year two of the corevette....Craig

What about the one that got away

                          Mike,

You really need to relate the story of the body that you went to buy with your brothers in dads new car. When you were going to cut it in half with a chainsaw. And the fact that when judging a '59 in Joplin about 25 yrs. later you recognized the owners' name of the '59 as the same name of the car you were going to cut in half.... Funny thing it was the same guy.
