Re: At one time UPS was cheap
I don't have allot of experience with FedEx. Their ground division (the old RPS) was, and I say was cheaper on double oversize. ??? Now. The US postal service is the best bargain on 1-2 pounds, especially to rural, remote non-commercial addresses. And beats everyone hands down on Alaska or Hawaii for small packages. Airborne is generally cheaper to Australia and the Orient. But my daily experience with the day in and day out costs of shipping Corvette parts ended in November 2001 when I semi-retired.

Geoffrey-----
I remember the old saying about"....nickel and diming you to death". Sounds like UPS has taken that to a new level; they "5 dollar you to death". Actually, though, UPS has definitely and substantially increased their rates over the past several years. And, I agree, the plethora of new rates, services, extra fees, etc. is absolutely bewildering. It used to be UPS ground or UPS Blue Label (air) and the zone charge for each. Pretty simple. Now, there are about 8 classes of service, the same zones that there used to be, and a large number of other "factors" that need to be figured into the equation to come up with the charge for any package. If a flow chart were generated for this it would look like an octopus. They've made the USPS rate structure seem simple by comparison.
Keep in mind though that the $5 charges are not "fines". Only a government agency can assess a fine, per se. So, they call these "service charges". But, wait, government agencies are starting to use the terms "service charges", "fees", "user charges", etc., now, too. Here in California, raising most "taxes" requires voter approval and, often, 2/3 voter approval. So, government agencies now call things that used to be called taxes by other names. It's all a matter of semantics. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: At one time UPS was cheap
Although they don't seem to advertise it much, FedEx ground is much cheaper than UPS ground. I've shipped over 75 packages, all car parts, different sizes and weights, and without exception FedEx was much less expensive, in some cases 40%less and quicker Go to the UPS website and plug in a hypothetical package, weight, size, zip, etc. and get a rate. Then go to the FedEx website and plug in the same #s and get their rate, you'll be surprised at the difference. ( By the way, I don't work for FedEx )- Top

Re: Jim I aready have a job: Cooking
I do them. However when my MIL stays for the summer she does the dishes. My MIL and wife says I'm a better cook than them. And they should know. But tomorrow, I'm taking the day off.
Happy Thanksgiving to all my Corvette friends and Prayers for our Troops.

I think a more pressing consideration with UPS, FedEx,USPS et al is the safety of the package. How many of you have had a delicate or breakable part destroyed by some over-paid moron who only wants to get the truck loaded so he can get home to watch "The Sopranos"? Then comes the "insurance claim from hell" trying to collect from the shipper for your ruined part(s). A friend of mine actualy had his new '67 coupe headliner deliverd to him folded in half!!
I wouldn't mind the cost if I could be guaranteed I would get what I ordered in one (undamaged) piece.- Top
