Re: Vette VIN Research - check the tank again

    Klaus,
I have not looked there but I will. I feel like I'm on a treasure hunt. I have heard that they can be placed in the steering column also. Have you ever heard of this?

Re: Research - Is the Emission sticker present?

      Tom,
The emission sticker apears to be original. It is worn but says it complies to 1971 standards. In the upper left hand corner of the sticker are the letters AX and it says it came with a 350 w/ 4bbl. It is an LT1 so the engine size and 4bbl are correct. What can you tell from the AX? The sticker code is not listed in my books
      Thanks,
      Todd

It probably also shows a part number 3994020. You'll see it certifies the LT1 with either the manual or automatic transmission and transistor ignition. Also shows that it was equipped with the A.I.R. emission controls so the pump part number would be a 7801149 A.I.R. pump.

Re: Research - Is the Emission sticker present?

          Tom,
I greatly appreciate your help with this. Can I ask where you got that info? Did it come from a book that I can get or is it just from years of experience (something I don't have with Vettes)? That part # is correct.
          Thanks again,
          Todd

Much can be found in the NCRS Tech Manuals tho for selected years the information is incomplete or sparse. I've used several sources to verify what's incomplete but have been researching emission systems over the past few years for the C3 generation.

              Re: Research Library

              Todd,
The emission label information, and a whole lot more, is available in the 1970-1972 Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide (TIM&JG) available from the NCRS store. Hit the "NCRS Store" button at the top of the page.
One can enjoy their Corvette to the fullest if one has a complete library. The TIM&JG is high on the list. MF Dobbins' "Vette Vues Fact Book for 1968-1972" is another, as is Alan Colvin's series -- "Chevrolet by the Numbers" or "Corvette by the Numbers." If you intend to do any mechanical work on your Corvette, and some would advocate even if you intend to hire the work done, the factory service manuals - Chassis Service (for on-car work) and Chassis Overhaul (for off-car work) for your 1971 - are invaluable. The Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) is also worth while to see how the factory assembled your car. All are available from the NCRS store.

                Re: Research Library

                Terry,
Thanks for the advice. I ordered the TIM&JG. I do have the assembly manual and the service manual. They are good for mechanics but don't give much info on what the numbers mean. I need to build a better library than I have now. Thanks again.

                  Re: Research Library

Todd, I think you will find a good reference library will come in handy. Nothing will provide all the answers, and no book is 100% accurate. Just watch out that the library doesn't become the end in itself. Ask me how I know...
