    Mid year coil identification

    Greetings!

I recently replaced the coil in a 67 327-350 coupe. An occassional engine miss led me to go thru the ignition system, where I found the secondary resistance of the coil to exceed the recommended range. I put a new Delco in its place.

I was wondering if there was any chance that the coil I removed could be the original one. Ok, probably not, but how could I tell?

The coil I removed has the words Delco-Remy on the top front, in a slightly ornate font. Embossed on the side, near the top is the number 202 over 12-V. I can find any other interesting markings.

What would an original coil look like?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Cheers!

Within the limits of a written description, it (an original) would look exactly like what you described.

Hi Brian, There are two good articles on the Delco coils in Vol 21 #3 and vol 22 # 2 of NCRS Restorer Magazine. Page Campbell #2299

Hey, that's exciting news. At least until I can find something to conclude otherwise. The coil certainly 'looks' old enough, with some rust here and there.

So my question now becomes, is it possible to rebuild a coil? It isn't obvious to me how it goes together (or comes apart), but if they can be disassembled without being destroyed, could the guts of a new coil be placed inside the old shell? How crazy am I to be thinking like that?

            Cheers!

Unfortunately, I don't think you can. i discussed re-use of unique coil parts with the gentleman from "Goat Hill" restorations, as I was admiring his Repro coils at Spring Carlisle. He indicated they remake all the parts new for their coils.

You are NOT crazy for thinking about rebuilding an original coil. Bill may well be correct about the difficulty about doing this (he's a knowlegable guy). However, I humbly submit that until you give it a try, don't dismiss the idea.

Some of the stuff I've rebuilt was never designed to be rebuilt. In some cases the factory engineers categorically stated it couldn't be done! Other stuff I've tried to rebuild ended up in something less than success.

Even in the cases of the failures, I learned a heck of a lot on how the device worked, how they engineered it in the 60's, etc.

With all this said, I encourage you to satisfy for yourself wether it can be done or not. Take one apart & see what makes it tick (naturally, one that is non-functional or in really rough shape). Even if you're not successful, I can guarantee you'll have some fun!
