The starter is an original Delco. Occasionally, it spins but is not engaged in the flywheel. I removed it and had it tested on two different machines, that test for proper current draw, etc. and everything checks out OK, I guess the machine can only detect a problem if it occurs during the test. I don't want to put it on only to remove it again, since I know there is a problem. While it's off I thought I'd replace the solenoid, which I believe is what engages the gear into the flywheel. Is there anything else I can do, or replace short of having it rebuilt?

Rob and Wayne----
Yes, the starter drive is usually not replaced in rebuilt starters, including Delco rebuilt units. It OFTEN should be replaced. What you need is a GM #10470757 starter drive assembly also known as Delco D-2051. It GM lists for $30.57 and will be about $20 through Delco.
I'd replace the solenoid, too, as you suggest. That's GM #1114458 or Delco #D-981. GM list is $35.54 or about $25 from Delco. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
