    '66 BB STARTER

The starter is an original Delco. Occasionally, it spins but is not engaged in the flywheel. I removed it and had it tested on two different machines, that test for proper current draw, etc. and everything checks out OK, I guess the machine can only detect a problem if it occurs during the test. I don't want to put it on only to remove it again, since I know there is a problem. While it's off I thought I'd replace the solenoid, which I believe is what engages the gear into the flywheel. Is there anything else I can do, or replace short of having it rebuilt?

Replace the drive, or commonly called a Bendix for the man that invented it.

      Rob and Wayne----

Yes, the starter drive is usually not replaced in rebuilt starters, including Delco rebuilt units. It OFTEN should be replaced. What you need is a GM #10470757 starter drive assembly also known as Delco D-2051. It GM lists for $30.57 and will be about $20 through Delco.

I'd replace the solenoid, too, as you suggest. That's GM #1114458 or Delco #D-981. GM list is $35.54 or about $25 from Delco.

        Wayne,

The bendix seems to operate freely and I can't get it to bind operating it by hand. Would it be obvious if it was the problem?

I found quite a bit of corrosion on the contacts in the solenoid. I put my original Delco Remy cap on a new solenoid and think (hope) that should do it. Thanks....

No. You cant tell if the bendix is bad most of the time, but it will spin occasionlly and get worse as time goes on, until finally it will not activate at all. Its cheap. Change it.
