    Re: 1969 Power Steering Pump

    Bill,

I wouldn't torque the bolts any more than recommended. Does your car have air conditioning? Is the pulley stamped steel or cast iron? If your car does not have a/c, it should have the cast iron pulley which looks like it is a little thicker according to the pictures. I have not actually compared pulleys side-by-side so I could be wrong.

    Re: 1969 Power Steering Pump

    Allen,

The car doesn't have AC. I just took a good look at the new and old pulleys and the only difference is that the old one is tapered on the inside and the new one isn't. This seems to be causing the new one to sit about a quarter inch farther out from the pump. They both look steel to me. Have you ever heard of anything like this on one of these pulleys? I'm going to send Eckler's an e-mail too. That's where I bought the pulley. Thanks for your help.

      Bill------

The pulley with the tapered shaft hole is a 63 to 74 pulley. Likely this is a GM #3770509 which is usually stamped on the pulley. This pulley will only work with a pump with a 63-74 pump with a tapered shaft. This shaft has threads on the end for a retaining lock-nut.

The pulley with the non-tapered shaft hole is a 75-82 style pulley. Likely, this is a GM #14023175 which is usually stamped on the pulley, too. This pulley will only work with a 75-82 pump with a non-tapered shaft. The non tapered shaft has no threads on the end and uses no locking device of any kind. It's simply an interference fit between the shaft and the pulley.

The 63-74 and 75-82 pumps are FUNCTIONALLY interchangeable AS A UNIT on any 63-82 Corvette, but the pullies are NOT interchangeable bewteen pump styles. If you use a 75-82 pump on an earlier car, then you have to use the 75-82 pulley, too, and if you use a 63-74 pump on a 75-82, then you have to use a 63-74 pulley, too.

The GM #3770509 pulley is GM-discontinued but available in reproduction. The GM #14023175 is still availabe from GM.
