I have just returned from Spring Carlisle, where I found 2 Holley 2818-1 carbs, the first one with a date code of 483 (1964, August, 3rd week) and the second one with a date code of 492 (1964, September, 2nd week). My engine (L79) has a casting date of I 12 4 which I read to be September 12 1964.
Which carb should I use? Should the carb date pre-date the engine block, or be the same as the enginge block, or should it be nearer to the build date of the car (in my case, November 1964)? When I read the relevant section of the NCRS Judging Manual, I did not find any information explaining how much of a difference in date codes for carb vs engine block.
There is a substantial price difference between the 2 carbs (approximately $200), so this also a factor. Regardless of which carb I purchase, my intention is to have the carb professionally rebuild by Bob Kunz.
