    Goldlines from Diamondback

    Hello,

My '66 has Dunlop Axiom II's on it right now 215 70 R15 and I want to go to a Goldline. I was going to get Pirelli P4000's and have the stripe put on but Diamondback no longer let's you send tires in to have the stripe applied. The tire they recommend is a Firestone Supreme Si and I was wondering if anyone has these on their car and can recommend them. It seems like a lower end tire which is what is on the car now. Other options are something like an Eagle GA or Firestone Firehawk. I don't know if there are any quality or safety concerns with the Firestones after the past problems they have had. The car does not get driven hard, so I'm not sure if I should be concerned with the speed rating. Diamondback seems to feel that the S rated supreme is more than adequate but after reading all the posts here on the board and the article in the restorer I have my doubts. Any advice?

My other question is has anyone gone from 215 70 R15 to 205 75 R15 that could share their experience as far as ride and handling differences?

    Thanks,

    Ian

You can find any candidate tires on the manufacturers' web sites along with technical information such as speed rating and UTQG rating.

my understanding from several emails with Diamondback is that individuals cannot send in their own tires from the outside, but you can have Diamondback obtain the tire you want and they will then apply the stripe you want and send it to you.

Or, could you ask them about having a set drop shipped from the Tire Rack?

That is what I originally wanted to do but now you have to buy the tires from Diamondback.

And they won't get you the ones you want, even if you tell them you don't like their "stock" choices?

I was told they will not use the Pirellis because of some quality issues they have with that brand. They will get me other tires and that is what I am trying to decide on.

Hi Ian, I just mounted 205 75 R15 Goldline Firestone Supremes from Diamond Back last week on my 66 and so far with limited miles they feel very good and tight.
They balanced well and look very good. I had 70 series white walls on the car
before and really don't notice any difference but I drive very little and do not drive hard so I can't comment on performance. If you're interested I can send you a pic of them mounted to see. Joe.

                  Re: Goldlines from Diamondback

err, my bad. When I did my Diamondback Goldline thing (ordering the tires from TireRack and having TireRack ship direct to Diamondback) DiamondBack quickly called me a day later and said "you know, we just wanted to remind you that, if we ruin the tire during our "process", we cannot be held responsible since you didn't buy the tire through us." To which I said - well, I am relying on and paying for your expertise and skill, so should you, in the course of rendering the service I am paying you (handsomely) for, screw up one or more of my tires, I may not agree with the position you are telling me you would take. But let's cross that bridge if and when we get to it. (Apparently, they would not take this position if you had bought the tires directly from/through DiamondBack). All was still kept cheerfull, however.

When I called a few weeks later to check on the status of my order (they eneded up arriving at my house that same day) DiamonBack said, hey, you know you were the last guy we allowed to send in outside tires, we don't do that anymore now.

PS, the tires were Firestone Indy 500 Firehawks, sure they perform better than what was on there, actually I like them in hard cornering, good feedback and they let loose (eventually, at an appropriate limit) gradually and predictably. But I have not side-bysided them with the P4000. I have heard more than a few tales of hard to balance / keep balanced on those, maybe that is what DB is referring to. I still think that DB will go out and buy any tire you tell them to, but maybe they have scalled that back too.

DiamondBack will get any tire you want (if readily available), or they will accept your tire shipped to them (policy as of last month when I ordered mine). But consider the warranty issue. If you send them a tire and they vulcanize thier whitewall or redline, or whatever onto it and you have a tire failure on a tire you bought and shipped to them, what do you suppose the tire manufacturer will say when you return it to your local tire shop? Your out of luck, these tires have been heated & modified. If you buy the tire from DiamondBack, they'll extend the tire manufacurer's warranty fully since they sold it to you. BTW, mine turned out beautiful.

Dean, they don't take customer-shipped tires anymore, unless they have done an absolute about face - recent development.

Correct, they will not accept tires sent to them any longer.
