    NCRS and Repro Parts

Since I have never had a car judged, I am a bit curious how the NCRS judges treat restoration parts such as interior panels, ignition shielding, plug wires ect. Is it better to have a nice new repro part or good used original part restored as well as possible. Are service replacement parts, though not original to the car better than repro? Any comments on this would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    A.G. Logsdon

    A.G.,

You bet I would like to comment on that subject. First original parts that are restored and in great shape are the best parts to have on your Vette cause you get more points for originality than condition or cleaniness.

Secondly, if the restoration part cannot be distinguished from the original in any way it should receive all points for originality, condition and cleaniness.

Third, replacement parts from GM are generally of poor quality and are just sold by GM or big house parts dealers to fill the hole but some are originals and should receive full credit for the above.

And the last point I would like to make is some judges have been known to say that it has to be a reproduction because it's in such good shape so I'm going to take off for originality.

The judging chairman for the event should make sure they never judged again or subjected an NCRS member to such non ethical conduct.

OK Joe Here I go again, I may have been in NCRS to long, but I remember when people would search out NOS or at least original parts for their Corvette or at the least restore it. NOW repro's are cheaper, clean, available ,so why buy a dirty , needing restoring original part. Corvettes now have so many repro parts installed that I also have seen judging take points off on an original part. My original 55 NOS headlight screens would get zero compared to the repro's that are on most 53 to 55 Corvettes because most owners just buy repro's( which are not near original looking). I pride my self for having %99 original parts on my Corvettes which many are NOS , yes, some original parts are not quite perfect but they are real. I sell parts at meets now and then and when I see a Corvette having a wrong repro part on his or her Corvette and try to sell that person my part. ( they look at it as a piece of sh&^%T.) I now sell what parts I have on e-bay and post buyers are all old timers. Many new people to day are different then back when us old guys got the Corvette bug. ( now I don't need hate mail).this is only my two cents -which means little to nothing today.

OK, let me add to the confusion by asking for clarification on NOS parts with a date code after the car was produced. For example, a correct casting number NOS water pump for my 1974 big block, and the part is date coded for January 1975. My car was produced in May 1974.

                Comments relative to originality?

I had this exact dilemma when I had my car judged in June. I had the original air cleaner lid which had 35 years of wear on it and a perfect, new, reproduction from Paragon with me. Which to use? I went with the original even though I was certain to lose points for condition. The first thing the judge did ws to turn it over and check the center hole for a ridge. He determined that it was indeed an original and he gave me full credit for originality and I may have lost a point for condition. Just MY 2 cents.

I must agree if the 75 water pump is the exact design as your 74 pump. it's original but for the date code. Only if the design was different would it be a replacement. You would loss points on the date but not originality. ( same as a generator from a 56 to 61) The genny would be correct but for the date.
