    Re: Original Corvette Documentation Coming

Bill, I'm sorry but I respectfully disagree, at this point Jim Mattison, no matter how you spell his name, is doing a DISSERVICE to the Corvette Hobby. How you ask? By NOT being upfront with information on this subject. I know he reads these boards and could comment-----either way, but does not.
In fact, I have heard, from a very reliable source, that he doesn't even have a current contract with Chevrolet to pursue this data within GM.

    Re: Original Corvette Documentation Coming

All this seems strange to me. Why is the info available for Bowling Green cars and not available, for say, the year before in St, Louis. Hard to imagine they never had or destroyed all records and all of a sudden decided to make or keep records because they moved to Bowling Green. Also hard to imagine that Pontiac and/or other divisions of GM kept the records and Chevy did not. It also occurs to me that the Corvette, the flagship of the Chevy line, would have had a lot of records,as it has been at least more than once, controversial within the GM inner circle as to the merits of its very existance, and because of this was probably under close scrutiny year in and out. It would be nice if GM could be petitioned to state if the records in fact do exist or in fact do not exist and settle this, dispelling the mythical aspects now prevalent. Seems to me this should some how be a simple thing not requiring the services of Geraldo Rivera, but then again, considering all the myth accumulated over the years, maybe it does.

Art I consider you the most reliable source for information on records, given your task several years ago. I think, like many others, it ain't gonna happen.

Not all GM divisions have the production records. I would love to get documentation for my 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W30, but Olds has stated they do not have the records.

Thanks Dick, but this thing with Jim is starting to get to me, I guess because I do have a fairly good background in this subject and LOTS of people STILL want to think that he is going to find the mother load. Well I think it's time for Jim to publicly address this issue and let everyone know what he has or hasn't found and I can't think of a better public forum than this one to put it on.

                How about it Jim?

                    Art,
Over the past few months, Jim has made a few posts on another web site board regarding his quest. He has mentioned that the records went from a central location to the plants themselves at some point. Some of those plants are now closed, so he's not sure where those records went. Now, I know that on this forum, 99% are only concerned with the St. Louis plant, but his mission is to search as many of the plants as he can and find as much as he can, covering as much of Chevrolet's production as possible. I "think" his mission is to keep working at this until he feels there just aren't any more records to be found - then begin the same type service as PHS, rather than going public as the info comes in, or stopping when (and if) he has the Corvette info.
There is quite a long thread about his endeavor on Yenko.net, under the COPO forum. Hope this helps.
                    Verne.

Verne, I looked at the Yenko site and did not see any posts by Jim.
Could you give me a better url?
