    Re: Original Corvette Documentation Coming

    Larry------

The last St. Louis Corvette was built at the end of August, 1981. The only activity at that plant after that time was shipping out the remaining inventory of cars and removing whatever production equipment could be used elsewhere.

The St. Louis Corvette plant, although a completely seperate building, was part of a much larger complex known as St. Louis Assembly, once the largest assembly complex in the entirety of GM . St. Louis Assembly continued producing other Chevrolet models for a while after Corvette production ended. I don't recall how long this was, but it was not a really long time.

As far as records go at the St. Louis Corvette plant, I recall a story that George Barlos, a long-time employee there, once told. It seems that for quite a bit of his tenure there, George was involved in inspection. He told how he had an "office" in the basement of the plant. Since the plant was very old, his "office" was a rather makeshift sort of place. On his own initiative and for some unspecified period of time, he maintained copies of the build sheets or some other paperwork for each car in his office on what he described as "wire racks". He emphasized that he was not required to do this, he just did it on his own. As far as the plant was concerned, the sheets could just have been thrown away.

At some point in time, there came to be an issue of various records within GM Corporate. Prior to this time, apparently no one cared one way or the other about George's records. However, subsequent to the corporate issue, when it came to the attention of "higher-ups" that George was maintaining this filing system, he was told by plant management that he had to remove and destroy the records. So, that's what he did.

        Art-----

I really don't see where this project, whether it ever comes to fruition, or not, is doing any disservice to the Corvette hobby. I don't feel, at all, like I'm being "strung along". If the whole thing falls flat on its face, the hobby is no worse off than it is now. And, if it produces some useful information, so much the better. If someone lets this whole thing get their hopes up, that's their problem; it's not a problem for the hobby, as a whole. The old saying is just as true here as it ever was-----don't count one's chickens before they hatch (regardless if someone is saying that they're going to hatch).

Quite frankly, just the possibility that such records might be forthcoming could have a positive impact-----the "specter of such a possibility" might be sobering enough to give some folks pause if their contemplating creating fraud.

My '62 Dates are off about the same. I think the Canadian Date is related to the Import/Shipping date.

                            Jim -

They may have changed the format of the documents since the 50's, in terms of what they recorded and how they described dates. The GM of Canada documentation generated in 2000 for my sold-new-in-Canada '69 Z/28 doesn't show a "Production Date" - just a "Date Shipped", which is the correct date it left Norwood, based on known build dates by VIN for other Norwood cars in our CRG (Camaro Research Group, www.camaros.org ) database. It's possible that their notation in the 50's for "Production Date" was actually the date the car was imported into Canada, as that's the date their tax and duty liability would have begun.

Maybe I missed something however in ANY of the information in ANY public domain concerning the " Chevrolet build" information that is/was to be provided by Jim Mattison's company/group, Corvette specifically was NEVER mentioned! Camaro, Chevelle, Nova YES, they were specifically mentioned. But never Corvette!

Is this discussion/subject of Corvette build information availability here because Jim or his company has publicly said the Corvette information was coming or just wishful thinking on the part of our hobby? Or is it because a Corvette is a Chevrolet just like the other models mentioned above?

Help me understand why everyone's panties are now in a wad when it comes to this often discussed subject? From what I have seen, there is no "new" information anywhere that the Corvette information actually exists. Please tell me I am wrong.
