    Engine ID

Can someone tell me what year and type of car or truck this GM engine came from?
The pad has the number T0509S. The date code is E764. The casting number is 3858130 or 3958130. The 8s in the casting number are not clear and the 1 could possibly be a 7. It also has a large 5T and conv1 on th bellhousing end. Thanks in advance. Jimmy

'64 327/250hp Powerglide, cast May 7 and assembled May 9th, at Tonawanda, and originally installed in a full-size passenger car; 5T is the pattern number, and it was poured on mold line #1 (casting #3858180).

        Jimmy,

I have a few questions if you don't mind. Does that block have the small 1/8" pipe plug at the front, just below where the intake manifold rubber end seals would be located, or is there just a raised round pad where the hole and plug would normally be?

Also, are the casting numbers at the rear the same size as most Flint blocks or are they about 20% smaller? Thanks,

        Michael

Thanks Mike. I've seen only one 3782870 63 Tonawanda block and it had no plug either. Just wondered if that was always the case with these blocks.

I also remember the casting numbers being only about 70% as large as Flint numbers. Interesting motors.

                    Different Engine ID

While this question is being addressed, I have a Corvette owner neighbor who told me he had a block in his shed and wanted to get rid of it. I just went to look at the block and I initially saw 512 as the last numbers of the casting and jumped to see the cast date A 8 9, then I jumped to see the engine pad stamp and found CE9A35042. Oh well, now that I see that he has a service replacement block I started to look over it more closely and found that the cast number was not the Corvette used 512 number, but it had a cast number of 3959512. I looked through my reference books and could not find the application for this. Additionally I remember sometime ago seeing a way to de-code the stamp pad information for CE blocks. Any help with this. I have an local engine shop that will buy the block, but I want to know what I am selling before I tell my neighbor bad advise. Thanks and see you at Windsor....

                            Dennis -

The CE9A35042 tags it as a 1969 Flint Engine warranty replacement; there's no way to decode the innards from the "CE" number - Flint Engine's allocated block of "CE" numbers started at 20,000, so this one is the 15,042nd "CE" engine they produced in 1969.
