The 1/8" NPT pipe plug was used at Flint Engine to plug a drilled oil gallery hole their machining process required; Tonawanda used a different machining process for the oil galleries which didn't require the intersecting hole drilled externally, so they don't have the hole or the plug.

That's what I thought but I couldn't figure out why Flint needed it to complete the drilling for the passage but Tonawanda did not. There must have been several internal differences between the two castings. Thanks John....

Yes, the Tonawanda 870 blocks had smaller casting numbers, and no pipe plug. They also had a 2 digit year code cast in, as opposed to the Saginaw (Flint) single digit year code. They were not used in Corvettes.
