Cut-out on bottom -right of fan shroud

I have seen several mid-year, small block, fan shrouds with about a 3'x4' cut out at the bottom right side (passenger side). Any body know what that's for? One guy has it on his 63 and another on his 64. These look crudely cut out.

Is it in the shroud? Or lower valance?

    Bob,

Are you talking about a cut out in the fan shroud or in the lower valance? My 66 has a cut out about that size in the lower valance on the passenger side. Maybe it has something to do with the drain on the radiator? My entire radiator, shroud, core support, etc. are out of the car, so I don't know quite what comes close to that area now.

Craig; is your cutout in the lower valance?

            Craig,

Craig is your cutout in the lower valance?

It's odd that NOS service replacement lower valances that I've seen do not have that cut out.

Re: Craig; is your cutout in the lower valance?

I just looked and I may have slightly mis-reported. The cutout IS in the lower valence, directly under the brace that runs to the center crossmember that supports the passenger side bumper. However, it is NOT 3" by 4", it is more like 1" by 3", and has rounded corners on the bottom of the cut. This is the original valence on the car, it shows signs of the orignal paint....Craig

I agree the size is smaller then 3x4

                    Craig,

Going from memory the size of the cutout on my lower valance is smaller than 3x4 and I agree that it is just above the brace. I'm still not sure why the cutout is there.

Maybe Bob's initial message really was talking about his fan shroud and not the valance.

I have a '66 front clip with the cut like you describe in the lower panel. It is 3-1/4 inches by 3/4 inches. It is located at the rise/indention where the bumper brace goes. It is rough cut, more like someone did it with a hand saw or even a pair of side cutters.

                            Crude indeed

                            Mike,

I agree. The cut in mine is crude enough that I thought for certain a previous owner had done it for some oddball reason and I started looking for an NOS panel to swap in. Only a few months ago I saw another 66 with the same crude cutout, so then I realized it was an original GM feature.
