68 Wiper Motor

My 68 coupe currently has the SERVICE replacement wiper motor (4918712) with Julian date 79, year 1974. On the motor is a black plastic cover (4961229). From information in the archives, I believe this plastic cover was only temporary.

Q1: Was this cover supposed to be removed and a washer pump installed?

I don't have the washer pump, so-

Q2: What is the correct washer pump number?

Looking through the AIM, I found the Wiper Motor Assembly is 5044683.

Q3: Is it correct that the 5044683 is a combination of the 4918712 motor and washer pump? And if so, would the sticker on the motor reveal the Assembly number or the Motor number?

1) Yes, the plastic cover was supposed to be removed and replaced with the washer pump assembly;

2) The original, correct washer pump was GM #4918474. It has been discontinued for 35 years. A functional, but not "correct", pump assembly is still available from GM under GM #12494836;

3) The C3 motor assembly is usually identified with a silver label which has the part number for the PRODUCTION assembly and date code (i.e. motor with pump; "5044683"). The motor and pump assembly was never available in SERVICE. However, I'm not completely sure that 1968 used this sort of label. 1969 and later did, for sure.

Joe,

If I understand correctly, with respect to PRODUCTION only, the Assembly (both the motor and pump) would have constituted p/n 5044683? Or in other words, 5044683 consisted of two other part numbers, those being 4918474 and 4918712.

Was it a common practice to take two separate items, each with its own unique part number, combine them and give the new "item" a different part number?

What you describe is correct; the combination of 2 components with seperate part numbers resulted in a third component with a different part number. This is a quite common occurrence in the "world of GM parts". Every ASSEMBLY is made up of parts with individual part numbers. In this case, the part numbers for the 2 assemblies "lose their identity" and become, together, the part number for the "assembly of assemblies".
