    stripped screw holes

Does anybody have any tips for dealing with stripped out screw holes in sheet metal? The holes in the windshield frame used by the screws attaching the outside windshield stainless trim are stripped out. I know of one trick which is to insert a small piece of wire into the hole with the screw. Does anybody know of any other methods?

Run the screw back in the hole several threads and then bump the handle end of your screw driver with the heel of your hand. If the hole is not stripped too bad, that will fix it. Old assembly line trick.

Leave the screw hole as it is, insert a good quality, tight fitting plastic anchor and trim off the excess. If it doesn't work for you, it won't leave a mess and is easily removed.

            Rob,

I assume you mean the kind of anchor typicaly used to secure screws in sheetrock. I doubt if one could install one of these without enlarging the hole first to accomdate the anchor.

Once it's in however, I think this would work fine. If not, then remove it and weld the hole like Mikie sez.

Your idea is a good one to try before draging out the welder to burn down the car.

I've used very small drywall type anchors, and used a rubber hammer to tap them it. Certain ones are harder than others and resist bending during installation.

That was my suggestion also. Terry
