    Re: Corvettes and Mustangs

    Joe,

I think GM management is a bunch of WEENIES concerning design and marketing. The C6 is certainly an evolution from the C5 as far as styling. Performance is again increased. Why change a good thing? We are lucky there was C5 to begin with given many of the stupid mangement descisions at the beginning of design of the C5.

The C5 is/was a huge hit with customers in styling, performnce and sales. Go the to Corvette show now and what do you see? Fat, 50+ in age, momma in the passenger seat, all the Corvette trinkets and trash owners can put on their body/car and an enthusiasm for the Corvette not seen in YEARS! The parking lot is full of C5's. Why should GM screw it up when they finally got it right as far as car sales are concerned? They would be crazy make the C6 a "revolutionary" car at this stage of the game now that Corvette is finally selling a good profitable levels.

This is exactly what GM did with the Cadillac Seville. The 92-97 Seville's where a sales and customer hit. The dealers wanted a new car that was evolutionary but revolutionary. Look at the 98-2004 Seville. Very similiar in appearance as requested by the selling dealers but a TOTALLY different car under the surface. Everything is different including the size of the wheelbase. It sold well for a few years but then became stale. Now they have the new revolutionary 2005 Seville for sale. Time will tell if Cadillac regains the excitement that Seville enjoyed in the mid 90's.

The bean counters are still in charge at GM. One good look at their product line plainly shows who is in charge. GM is getting better at design, marketing and sales in this country but only needs to look across the street at Chrysler and Ford for a GREAT lesson automotive design and manufacturing. Of course if GM really wants to get serious they should look at their foriegn competitiion who is SERIOUSLY eroding GM's market share and customer base worldwide. Of course this is a real stretch since GM cannot even match their cross town rivals in Detroit!

It's hard to believe that GM is Still number 2 in automotive production in the world. However from my perspective, I see that GM is dilligently working on becoming NUMBER 3!

Long live the Corvette? We'll see????

        Joe,

I totally agree with your feelings about the new mustang. I have a '66 G.T. convertible, tahoe turquoise, deluxe pony interior, air, styled wheels, etc., really nice, original "A" code car. I drove it over to look at the new mustang. For the first time, when I parked next to a new one I said, "hey, that's a nice car".

            Original C6 design Rejected? (front)

Could this have been the original design of the new C6? Bet Roy would have been in line for one.

                            Re: price killed the Camaro

what killed the camaro was the corvette because for a few more thousands you could get a corvette. the mustang does not have that problem at ford there is no step up in their performance line till you get to the $150K GT. i do not think that the camaro will ever come back because you will see rear wheel drive MC coupes soon. the new GTO was too expensive compared to a corvette and did not have the corvette mystic. i have owned new most all the the different models of corvettes, except the C-4 because it was a very bad example of a corvette because it handled like a "thin end of a 10# axe",they "shivered like wet chihuahuas over rought asphalt" and the suspension thrashed more backsides than helga,she-wolf of the SS. these are not my quotes but i think they are true compared to the C-5 and C-6. you can not put 400 HP into a car that does not have a low C of D and get good milage that GM needs for it CAFE so the aero deficient bodies of the past corvettes will not work. if it ws not for CAFE,safty ****s and the enviro nuts GM would still be bulding the 427/435 HP corvettes for sale.

The styling cues are so subtle nad "extrapolated" that, for all practical purposes, they're a non-issue. In fact, I think that you might find similar styling cues from previous Corvettes in other cars which aren't even made by GM.
