    66 Gas Tank Postion

The prior owner installed new gas tank using the old straps. The problem I'm dealing with is the filler neck is not properly positioned in the fill access area. The tank assembly is approx/ 1/2" to far forward. It's enough that the gas spill boot around the filler neck is noticeably distorted.
Looking at the AIM there doesn't appear to be any dimensions provided for tank placement.
Is it guided primarily by the strap and bolt arrangement with the mounting bracket? Should there be enough play in the straps and lip on the cross member to move the tank forward 1/2"

Loosen the straps enough to adjust the filler neck to be centered in the opening, even if it means removing the bolts. If necessary use longer than normal bolts to tighten up the straps with the tank in this position. Then loosen the bolts one at a time and replace them with the correct length ones. If these are the original straps they should conform back to their original shape and be long enough to allow the correct length bolts to be used.

Thanks Rob I did need to correct my post. I meant to say the tank needs to move to the rear.
I went down and looked again when I noticed my mistake. One thing that appears to be holding the tank forward some is the lip/flange of the gas tank halves. Are they supposed to be bent down so the strap is not pushed out?

I believe they are bent down for the reason you said.
