    Holley 3247-Original Versus "New"

I am trying to decide whether or not to purchase a "New" Holley 3247 ('66 425 HP) to replace my service dated 3247 carb. The carb I am presently using was re-built about four years ago and still performs relatively well with occasional minor adjustments. I realize that even though it has been re-built, certain areas of a 37 year old carb may not meet original tolerances.
My question is: Is the "New" 3247 identical to the original (other than the obvious lack of date stamp and fuel bowl bolts)? Thanks and best regards.

Is the 3247 being produced by Holley again, or are you referring to an 'new" carb from an earlier production period?

Holley Manufactured another "run" awhile ago...some of the carbs are showing up on Ebay. I believe the earlier carbs were dated, while that later ones had no date.

                Allan,

The NEW Holley carbs are the same in every respect with the exception of the metering blocks numbers and the bolts that hold the end bowls on. The article about the carbs gets into technical aspects of the site bowl plugs and their radius. A little overload but if you look at anything with a microscope no two parts will be the same.

The new Holley's have the Chevy Part Number stamped but no production date on the airhorn.

The great thing about the new Holley carbs is that they run nicely and probably will for another 30 years. No choke problems, hesitation, flooding or idle problems with the new 3247's. And best of all they are warranted by Holley.

                Regards,

                JR

                    i guess that means that

every one is checking thru their tool box for the correct size number stamps.

Character's are not that hard to find. Being able to stamp it and be undetectable, priceless. Just one or two of the rebuilders have that down pat. Takes time, patience, and special tools and jigs. No, I do not stamp them but I do know what it takes to do it. I had a discussion with one of them at Kissimee about how he had improved his work.

Judged eleven Holley's at a meet last year. Everyone of them had perfect date codes and were not Obvious restamps. Very lucky or good stampers

I beg to differ with your statements regarding my article. The "new" carbs that I studied (built in the '90s) are not even close to originals as the article details completely. I just rechecked my high resolution photos of a 3247 manufactured in 1999 and here are a few of the differences (as detailed in the article); accelerator pump housing and screws vastly different (as detailed in the article), main body vastly different with respect to bosses and tabs (as detailed in the article), throttle plate different (as detailed in the article), secondary link (as detailed), most of the screws and hardware (as detailed), etc. The small hardware differences detailed in the article were noted as minor differences. The bulk of the article details major differences.

The article gives purchasers ammunition to determine if a prospective carb is a modern carb which has been restamped. Most forgers will not be able to remove or change the MAJOR differences on the main body and the throttle plate, which the article details. Additionally, original style accelerator pumps are not available from Holley or anyone else (the only source is old original carbs). I have already received several calls and emails regarding recent sales of supposed orginal carbs, which appear to be restamps. As Dick detailed, the numbers are the easiest thing to copy. The major casting differences are another story.
